Dr. Beer on COVID Vaccination during Pregnancy
This morning’s Open Your Eyes also looked at the fear among some pregnant women about seeking public health care during the pandemic. They may be afraid of contracting COVID-19 during their visit to the doctor for a scheduled check-up. Maternal and Child Health Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Doctor Natalia Beer, says public health facilities are adhering to protocols. She says the best protection for pregnant women against the virus is the COVID-19 vaccine. The Ministry of Health has received recommendations that pregnant women be administered the Pfizer vaccine.
Dr. Natalia Largaespada Beer, Maternal & Child Health Technical Advisor, M.O.H.W.
“Look at the evidence out there with relation to the administering of vaccines to pregnant women. And, the international federation of Gynecologist and Obstetricians, as well as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends the vaccination of pregnant women with COVID-19 vaccines. It is true that there was no trial among pregnant women. But, there is a surveillance system in place where a woman gets vaccinated, and knowing she is pregnant, they will follow through with that pregnancy. Or, women who got the vaccine and before receiving a second dozen they got pregnant, shortly after receiving the vaccine those women would be followed through, and the evidence is overwhelming. There is no risk for pregnant women and there is no risk for the unborn child because of the use of the vaccine.”
