ComPol Advises Be Responsible About COVID
As far as the COVID restrictions are concerned, the Commissioner of Police also had some sobering advice for everyone. The COVID-19 pandemic, he said, is one that every Belizean should take seriously and with a population of over four hundred thousand people to just over two thousand police officers it will take responsible behaviour on the part of everyone to control the COVID numbers.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“When we have people behaving irresponsibly, having parties here, there, everywhere, having social events here, there and everywhere, these are the things that take the numbers up. Now we’re seeing the numbers going down again, so people begin to feel lax. “Oh yeah, the numba dig oh down now soh I could goh drink now, I could this, I could that.” No! The numbers are going down. We must continue to do what we are doing to keep the numbers down. At the end of the day, I believe we have lost too many of our people to COVID-19 and we can’t blame anybody but ourselves because we goh party because wi young, wi think that if wi ketch the virus wi nuh wa dead. We goh party, wi ketch it, wi ker it home to wi granny or wi grampa, and dehn dead. That is irresponsible behaviour! And at the end of the day there is nobody to be blamed but the persons who are out there behaving irresponsibly and taking the virus to those who are vulnerable and killing them. So, I want to appeal to our people, as we enter this yuletide season, please remember that we’re not out of the woods where COVID-19 is concerned. Yes, the Police will be out there in full force to enforce the regulations, but the Police cannot be everywhere to monitor everybody’s behaviour. Do not do things that you know the regulations forbid you to do because in doing so, you put your life and the lives of others at risk.”
Marion Ali
“I think that a valid concern was brought up, that a lot of police officers do ignore or do not adhere to the restrictions, and we’ve seen them. How do you police the police?”
Chester Williams
“Marion, you are the media, right? When you see them, take their pictures and send them to me.”
