Maheia Says Too Early to Tell if COVID Outbreaks at Schools

Dian Maheia

C.E.O. Maheia noted that schools must strictly adhere to their preventative measures in order to prevent an outbreak in school.  This will require schools to strongly enforce these regulations at the front gate.  C.E.O. Maheia also advised parents to monitor their children, and to keep them away from school if they are displaying flu like symptoms.  But, with only three days into the start of the reopening, she suspects it may be too early to say conclusively that there is an outbreak in any school.

On the Phone: Dian Maheia, Chief Executive Officer, Ministry of Education

“We need to ensure we keep our mask on, and this is the important part, when it comes to school, we need to make sure that we are strict all around. So, we need to remind parents that if your child has any sort of flu like symptoms, anything we now recognize as COVID symptoms, we need to let the child stay home. If anyone in the home is sick or waiting for test results, the students should also stay at home. So, if you have three children, and one is sick but the other two are not showing symptoms, the other two still need to stay home. If you as a parent are at home waiting for a test result because you were in contact with someone at your work, you also need to keep your children home, because this is why we are seeing positive test results coming out of our schools. The intubation is actually happening at home. In just the two days that school have been open, that is not enough time for anyone to go to school, contract the virus, show symptoms, get tested. That is the information that we are getting. So we have to be responsible. Now, if we had already been open for a week or two weeks, then the conversation would be a little different. But, right now, we understand the nervousness, the trepidation, the fear that everybody feels. But, we need to remind everyone that we are just starting, that this first period of getting everyone back into the classroom for hybrid learning is going to be difficult.”
