AIDS Commission to Prioritize Most Vulnerable Demographic
Recent data suggests that two out of every three new H.I.V. infections occur in populations of men who have intercourse with other men. As a result, the National AIDS Commission is placing greater priority on this demographic, as well as the transgender population.
Enrique Romero, Executive Director, National AIDS Commission
“The epidemic in Belize is considered as a generalized epidemic with concentration on particular key populations. In 2017 a mode of transmission study was done with the Ministry of Health. In that study it was telling us that two of every three new infections would occur in the population of men who have sex with men. So, in the development of the proposals, N.S.P., it has to be evidence based. These are some of the requirements from any donor. They want the donation to back up the activities we want to implement. So, basically the focus is on persons living with H.I.V. and AIDS in general, with a heightened focus on this key population, which is men who have sex with men and transgender persons.”
