The Caribbean Director of the International Labour Organization is currently in Belize. During the five days visit, Dennis Zulu and his team will be meeting with employer organizations, labor unions, and government representatives. It is all a part of the I.L.O.’s work within its one hundred and eight seven member states as it seeks to set labour standards and develop policies and programs that promote a decent working environment for men and women. Following a meeting with the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industries this morning, Zulu met with the National Trade Congress of Belize to hear a presentation on the labour issues unionized workers are facing in Belize.
Dennis Zulu, Director, International Labor Organization Caribbean
“The purposes of my visits are really two. First of all I got appointed into my current position about a year and a half ago but was not able to travel to the Caribbean until about six months ago. So, my office in Port-au- Spain, which is the office that covers the entire region, is responsible for both English and Dutch speaking countries in our territories in the Caribbean. So, what I am doing at the moment is basically visit the member states. During my visit I am meeting the workers organizations, such as T.U.C. I am seeing employer organizations such as the Chambers who I saw earlier on today, but, also seeing the government. It is really both a courtesy call visit, but really to just get acquainted with some of the issues that our constituents, as you know the I.L.O. is the only agency that comprises of three partners, government, workers organizations, and employers. So, I am here to dialogue and meet them in person now that traveling is easier, but also to get an appreciation of what labor market issues there are in Belize, but also seeing how we can support our constituents in this country.”
