Minister of National Security Jorge Espat told News Five that these supplies came about due to negotiations he had earlier this year with the Miami Medical Team Foundation.

“Early in February of this year Mr. Nando suggested to me that I should meet some of his friends, American friends in Miami. Mr. Caesar Lozano, as well as Dr. Kendall, as well as Dr. Lewis who is the president of the Miami Medical Team Foundation. This is an organization that offers all over the world medical assistance to countries in need. And certainly we take every opportunity at the ministry to seek assistance for the Belize Defense Force, the Police Department. And we met I believe twelfth of February with the president and we began some serious discussion as to possible assistance to the Belize Defense Force.”

Espat says that shortly after the last meeting the supplies were immediately put on a container. Dr. Peter Craig told us about the supplies and how they will be distributed.

“As we have on display here today some of the items as you can see. Primarily a lot of the medical supplies include a lot of oral rehydration salts. We have intravenous solutions that we give in sets, needles and catheters and Oxygen masks, husks surgical drapes and pre-packaged sets for the care of surgical and after surgical operations.

The supplies as we have a force hospital up here which we give service to our personnels and their dependents. And we also do limited service to the Ladyville community. So we will be using a large number of the supplies but we will also be sharing the supplies with our sister the Karl Heusner and maybe the Ladyville Clinic as they service this area as well.”

The office equipment will be used to enhance the performance of the Ministry of Immigration and National Security. Hyacinth Latchman for News Five.

The Miami Medical Team Foundation is expected to send four more containers of medical supplies before the year is over.
