Belize and Mexico Work to Improve Tourism

Miguel Torruco Marquez

Tourism officials from Mexico are in Belize to discuss improving the relationship both countries share in that industry. Heading the delegation is Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marquez, who briefed the media of his meeting with Belize’s Minister of Tourism, Anthony Mahler and Minister of Transport, Rodwell Ferguson. He said coming out of that meeting are some first initiatives that have been agreed upon.

“The first thing that were going to do is that we’re going to start working in the training and education field. When I came here the first time, I was asking for some hotels but it’s not any hotel management skills. We have the experience. I think we have more than three hundred hotel schools in Mexico and we have been in the education field for a long time, so I think that this is a good point to start with because I think that education is the most important thing if we want to improve the tourism field. So we are going to start making an exchange program in hotel schools in order to suggest what could be the first academic program for the brand new hotel school. The main career that we suggest is started by the hotel business because it will represent restaurants, bars and nightclubs represents the eighty-eight percent of the employment in Latin America. So the program has to be focused in the hospitality field. So we are going to start working on those programs and for us it will be a pleasure to help start with the new hotel and tourism school for your country.”
