Will Medical Bills be Cheaper for Consultations in Belize?

Olivia Laviada

Medical tourism aside, one of the primary reasons Belizeans travel to Mexico is for the cheaper prices for medical services and medication. With these private hospitals having an interest in setting up in Belize, would it mean that costs will also go up?

Olivia Laviada, Marketing & Medical Tourism Manager, Galenia Hospital

“The doctors that we can send to Belize, they would charge exactly the same cost of the consultation that we charge in Mexico. The prices will be, as you mention, we are cheaper than Belize in some o the cases and the cost will be the same for you. Actually in our hospital, we have like our Belize wing and we offer the same cost and the same services that we have for our local patients in Cancun as well for our partners in Belize. We work with your insurance companies as well so when people from Belize have these insurance, we already have this agreement with them and we accept your insurance as well.”

“When normally it is more expensive the cost of the medicine here than Mexico, than Quintana Roo it is because of many things. Not only have the specialist here; it is the cost of the rent, cost of the properties, cost of maybe the building is more expensive than Mexico or is part of the taxes for importation of medical equipment. Normally it is not that the hospital wins more money. It is part of the process.”

During the pandemic, Galenia Hospital has been providing virtual consultations to patients.
