Melissa Diaz-Musa

And while health officials remain on high alert for monkeypox, COVID-19 continues to spread across the country. Fortunately, the number of infections reportedly on a daily basis continues to trickle downward. Doctor Diaz gave an update on the status of COVID -19 in Belize.

Dr. Melissa Musa Diaz, Director of Public Health Services

Yesterday the positivity rate was eighteen point nine percent with a hundred and eighty five new cases. We do have six hundred and eighty nine active new cases at this point country wide. So, we are still encouraging the similar measures that we have been encouraging you know. Protecting your vulnerable population is number one, ensuring that if you are pregnant, diabetic, obese, fighting cancer, all these things, to avoid crowded and closed spaces. Avoid persons who are sick, because even if you are sick, seven if somebody has a cough, cold, sore throat, you don’t know. You have not been tested. You cannot assume this is not COVID. You need to say, this is COVID and I am going to avoid this party or meeting this person. We are still promoting the vaccines. As you all know, we have the pediatric Pfizer vaccines. We have the vaccine sites that are opened country wide, Monday to Friday. We are encouraging parents to take your children in and get vaccinated. We are working with COVAX and bilaterally with other countries to try and procure other vaccines so that we can restart the booster campaign and even for persons that have not been vaccinated as yet.”
