C.E.O. for Tourism: Monkeypox Not an Issue for Belize Yet
The U.S., on Thursday, declared monkeypox a public health emergency after the virus was found to be spreading from state to state. But although about eighty percent of Belize’s tourists come from the U.S., there is no cause for serious concern at this time in Belize. That is what C.E.O. in the Ministry of Tourism, Nicole Solano communicated to us via message today when we reached her for a comment on the matter. The C.E.O. says that monkeypox is not an issue as yet for Belize, and it should not come across as a big challenge for us just yet. C.E.O. Solano wrote, “Even though the risk of monkeypox to the general population remains low, cases are on the rise and the declaration by W.H.O. that it is a public health emergency could impact the travel industry. We are monitoring the situation, and, so far, the arrival numbers have been higher than expected. All indications are that travelers will continue with their travel plans. The tourism industry continues with its recovery efforts, but we remain vigilant and are guided by the advice of Belize’s Ministry of Health for any special measures that may become necessary.”
