Corozal Family Question’s Decision to Put Accident Victim on Surgery Waiting List

The family of Aaliyah Marokin, one of the surviving students in Tuesday evening’s tragic accident on the Philip Goldson Highway, is seeking answers from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital as to why the Corozal resident was placed on a waiting list. According to one spokesperson for the family who chose to remain anonymous for fear of political victimization, Marokin was placed on a one-month waiting list at the hospital. But, the student’s family says she is in need of urgent surgery due to the severity of her injuries. They are questioning if their political affiliations have anything to do with the hospital’s decision.

“Aaliyah is a student of Escolar Mexico. Her transportation is usually a taxi or a bus. She and her boyfriend were traveling from school and they were coming back home. How the accident happened to be quite honest with you, I am not clear about it. She actually called saying that she is in a traffic accident. Of course the family all rushed there to see it. They transferred her to Corozal. Right there they told us that she was in a critical situation. She was continuously bleeding through her nose. She had some injuries to her face as well as a broken hip, leg and arm. Likewise with her boyfriend, he had been with a broken leg, and was cut on his head. So both of them needed emergency surgery, but the doctor that was there inspecting it said due to the complications of her hip and leg he would not be able to do the surgery in Orange Walk. Hence the reason she would need a specialist located in Belize City who would do the surgery for her. So, we waited until hours of the night until she was transported to Belize. When she reached they told her they would give her morphine for the pain, they bandage her hand, her leg and they told her they would not be doing any surgery and she needs to be on a waiting list and this surgery could potentially take a month times. Now, she is a twenty year old with her whole life there. What if any complications happen? Infections could happen. She has a broken leg, a broken hand and all you could do is just bandage. We need reasons as to why she is on a waiting list.  Is it because we are politically affiliated to the U.D.P. or is it because we are well known U.D.P.s that you are putting her on a waiting list? Or is it because the hospital does not have the medical attention to assist her due to the complications it has?”
