228 New COVID Cases Recorded in Past Week

As the country continues to experience another wave of COVID-19, tonight we can report that there were two hundred and twenty-eight new cases detected between December twenty-eighth and January third, this takes the weekly positivity rate to twelve point four percent. The COVID-19 Data Report issued by the Ministry of Health and Wellness illustrates that no deaths have been reported, but there are, however, two hospitalizations. The number of active cases now stands at one hundred and fifty.  News Five spoke earlier today with a ministry official about a new variant that has been detected in China, but reports are that it is a sub variant of omicron and has similar mild symptoms. The ministry continues to encourage persons five years and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible and for those eligible to take a booster shot, to do so as well.
