Have People Become Numb to COVID?
While omicron is the predominant COVID-19 variant in Belize and the symptoms associated with this strain are mild, there is still a level of anxiety brought on by the increasing number of active cases over the past few weeks. That concern is primarily among those persons who have chronic diseases, who are at higher risk. President of the Nurses Association of Belize, Renita Pop says that the fear is still there among some of its members.

“I don’t think it will be okay to say that the fear has gone away completely because COVID does affect patients or people with chronic illnesses and we have some of our staff who suffer with chronic conditions. And so not only fear from the population, but fear from some of the staff as well. The gathering would contribute to the spreading of the infection of course, so as nurses, we continue to advise the public to sanitize their hands, wash your hands, wear your face masks especially now that cases are increasing. So far we are not seeing significant cases that require hospitalization which is good and there is also the vaccine program so for those who have not received their vaccines, they can go to the healthcare facilities to receive their vaccines.”
