Cholera case reported in Cayo
Medical authorities say that while there may not be a large-scale outbreak of cholera in the Cayo District, they have confirmed one case involving a seventeen-year-old young man from Benque Viejo del Carmen. It is believed the man may have fell ill after he came in contact with food from across the Guatemalan border. One doctor we spoke with from the San Ignacio Hospital said that while they have been seeing a lot of diarrhea cases, none of them beyond the one have been confirmed as cholera. The doctor said that because they believe the source of the disease is in Melchor, the hospital is in a heightened state of preparedness just in case. Medical authorities have isolated one ward and have stocked up on supplies and intravenous solutions. Meanwhile the public is being advised to be careful when buying food or fruit from across the border.
