Student concerned about Belizean/Haitian family in Port au Prince
The death toll so far from Tuesday’s earthquake stands at forty thousand. But at least another hundred thousand are feared dead. The news has triggered one local student to try to make contact with a close family in the island. Misty Williams says that since the quake shattered most parts of Haiti she has had no luck in reaching the Haitian family. She is hoping that through this medium she can get word on the family.
Misty Williams, Concerned about Haitian Friends
“Dehn dah citizens of Belize and I want people know that dehn deh deh because wah lotta friends and people like family noh know dat dehn gone. Some people just know that they went away but they were going to Haiti for a month because that’s where they’re from. They came from very young so it’s the first time that they were going back, the two girls. Yesterday the phone finally rang like I was getting connection and it sounded like somebody on the other end picked up but when I said hello I couldn’t hear them and the phone cut. So I tried again and the last time it just rang out. I spoke to somebody that live with them, he’s Haitian too, he said that they went to Port au Prince so I’m sure that they are in Port au Prince but I’m not sure which part. From the time I saw it on the Belize news on Tuesday night, my first thought was on them but I didn’t know it was that serious until after the news I was watching CNN and I have been watching the live coverage since then and more and more it hit home because they are like my second family. I have known them for six years and we have always been together. So I don’t know what’s the condition right now and if they are living, how they’re feeling, I know probably they are crying, they’re not used to seeing dead bodies, that’s tragic. I don’t even know how to feel as the days go by.”
