Mother who killed infant sentenced to eight years

Shian White

Shian White

Eight years in jail; that’s what it came down to for twenty-three year old Shian White when she appeared before Justice Adolph Lucas in the Supreme Court today. White is the mother who was found guilty two weeks ago of Manslaughter in the death of her baby who she hit on the head and then left to die. It’s as stunning sentence and a peculiar case because manslaughter can carry a penalty for as much as twenty five years. And Judge Adolph Lucas deferred ruling last week to have time to be guided for sentencing. While no other similar case was found in Belize, the court heard of two cases in another country but which the prosecutor argued did not necessarily match White’s case. Her attorney, Phillip Palacio, cited the case of Godfrey Blackburn who was sentenced to three years by the court of appeal reversing a ten year sentence for manslaughter originally imposed by the trial judge. The judges noted in their ruling that “the defendant showed no tendency of violence, and that the act was out of character.’’  The other was the case of Linda Jo Lane and James Lane, a mother and stepfather who were convicted of manslaughter and cruelty of a twenty-two month child. The court had imposed a six years sentence but on appeal, the Court quashed the appeal for manslaughter and upheld the conviction for cruelty to a child. Yohhahnseh Cave, the prosecutor for the DPP’s office, was not in agreement with the relevancy of the cases and argued that in this jurisdiction, there are limited guidelines as it relates to sentences. White’s prison term is to take effect from January twenty-eight when a jury of nine found her guilty. Last May eleventh, White and her boyfriend had an argument; he left the house and did come back that night.  White became enraged and hit two year old Delsey. Her skull was fractured and the child was left unattended. A friend, however, persuaded her to take the child for medical attention, she did, but the two year old died three days later.

  2. Melanie C B says:

Shame on you, how can you hurt an innocent and defenseless child!

Reading this story makes me feel sick, i literally feel the urge to vomit, words cannot start to explain how sick i feel to read about suck crazz act on an innocent child. Our Government need to take a survey on our economy & start implimenting some limit to the amount of children one can have, because it is quite obvious that poor people keep having children & they cannot take care of these children who did not ask to come into such hardship. Maybe by limiting the amount of children a family can have might decrease poverty & crime.

It is easy for us to pass judgement on another human being and their action. Most of us dont wake up with murder in our minds ,your day can easily be switched by any turn off events throughout the day. No one considered that she also lost her own child, she will have to live with that scared memory imprinted in her thoughts forever. That sentence alone is a LIFETIME.

MY HEART GOES OUT TO HER AND HER REMAINING FAMILY!
LET GOD BE THE JUDGE ME AND HER.

  6. Also Concerned says:

It is difficult not to judge–and feel repugnance towards–a human being who takes the life of an innocent, defenseless child. It is even more poignant when that person turns out to be the mother of that child, the person who is to love and care for that child. Our children trust us, come to us for help. This should never have happened.

I would hope I never wake up with murder in my mind and that nothing occurs in my life that makes me lean toward taking another human being’s life. I control my actions. I walk away if I become so angry that I may hurt my child. And I resolve not to take another person’s life. This mother should have known better. Should have behaved better.

This woman lost her daughter–at her own hands. I, too, feel sick at reading this article. At her behavior.

Perhaps I am not God-like enough not to judge her. But I am enough God-like to value the life of fellow human beings and my children.

instead of taking her child’s life, maybe she should have taken her own.

  8. lisa says:

i can’t believe she only got 8 yrs, it should have been the death penalty. i read about a guy that stole food and some plastic bracelets, he got 9 yrs. the justice system is messed up. a murder gets less time than a thief, unbelievable.

  9. Pinky says:
