2 day course on Critical Care at K.H.M.H.

Story PictureEver been in a life threatening situation or know some who has? Then you will know that the response by medical personnel can be a matter of life and death. That is why the nation’s largest public hospital, the K.H.M.H. in collaboration with the Society for Critical Care Management from the U.S. is hosting a two-day course in caring for critically ill patients. The purpose is to improve response in critical care situations by nurses, paramedics, physicians and respiratory therapists. Practitioners from the B.D.F., B.E.R.T., and regional hospitals are learning to treat seriously ill patients to lessen and eliminate casualties. According to Dr. Jorge Hidalgo, there is always room for improvement in heath care.

Dr. Jorge Hidalgo, Head of Intensive Care Unit, K.H.M.H.
“They have Critical Care Support that is going on around the world and we was fortunate that they give us a grand education. Basically, they give a donation of books, they give a donation of materials and the presenter donating his time to be with us today and tomorrow in an intensive course basically to try and to teach the non-intensivists how to care for a patient in the initial twenty-four hours.”

Dr. Janice Zimmerman, Consultant, Critical Care Course
“We are trying to provide them information about the basic principles of critical care for people who are seriously ill.”

Duane Moody
“Critical Care—could you expound on that for me?”

Dr. Janice Zimmerman
“Well, probably the best way it says a patient who needs an intensive care unit or who has a life threatening medical problem. The highlight of this particular course is mechanical ventilation when people are put on life support; what are the complications and how do you make adjustments, but we teach them about shock—when a patient is in shock and how we deal with that.”

The course ends tomorrow with the presentation of certificates of completion to the participants.
