Peter Myvett murdered during second shooting incident

A Belize City youth was gunned down at ten minutes past twelve this afternoon. He is believed to be the main prosecution witness in the case of the grenade that exploded on Kraal Road in December of 2009. Fourteen year old Rudolph Flowers was instantly killed when it detonated and in January Lusby Martinez was charged with his murder. That case was yet to come up for trial, but there is word that a hit was ordered to silence Peter Myvett. News Five spoke to one of Myvett’s sister about how the incident played out on the street.

Twenty-two year old Peter Myvett was gunned down less than a hundred yards from his home. Residents heard five shots, and after three gunmen rode off, Myvett was lying on the ground by a public water pipe at the corner of Kut Avenue. His sister says the family is distraught.

“I got a call dehn just shot my little brother by Tigris Street by di public pipe. And dehn seh he tried to fit his way under di van but di gunman still shot him and though he was fighting for his life to run from them. But dehn still shot ah.”

“From what we’ve heard, one of the gunmen was wearing a mask. Did you get that same story?”

“I hear one or two of ah dehn mi have on wah mask and one mi have on one and wah next one mi neva have on wah mask. When my cousin halla gunman, two ah dehn run.”
Myvett was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His mother worked nearby at Cleopatra White Clinic. His sister said officers should have immediately told family members what happened.

Dehn shouldn’t ah mi put he inna di morgue without telling wah family member and my ma was right at Cleopatra White and Karl Heusner Hospital soh I noh know why dehn put my lee bredda inna di morgue without tell anybody anything because dat noh right. You supposed to alert di family first, notify di family before yoh put ah inna di morgue.”
The police are questioning people who were on the scene including the man who was washing the bus next to the pipe stand. According to Edith Myvett, her brother was shot two times in a previous incident.

“He was shot twice already before on di canal side. He got shot right here you can still see di bullet in his hand. Tomorrow he was supposed to go inna di theatre to go for a surgery fi tek out di bullet.”

“In any of those incidents did he see who shot him?”

“Di first time he seh he only si wah young man wid striped shirt, a red striped shirt; di first incident because they were trailing him from Yabra side to di canal side and he was with three other guys. But when they saw my brother was the guy they wanted, dehn left di other two to ride off and den di gunman just shot at my brother and ketch ah inna ih two hands. So I done know from he got dah first shot he was di target because if you were with three boys and a gunman come to shot you, you will shot up whomsoever deh wid you. You noh only wah shot my lee bredda and lef di next two fi go dehn own direction. So from dah first moment I mi know dah my lee bredda dehn come fa, but I neva expected dehn mi wah come way pan fi we turf da di public pipe fi kill my lee bredda.”
Though he wasn’t a model citizen, Edith says that they don’t know the motive for the shooting.

“I won’t say my bredda was a saint because inna your family you will have good and you will have bad. But my bredda no kill nobody yet dis dah weh I could tell anybody. My bredda noh kill nobody yet and dehn have my ma di grieve and me no like it. So if my ma feel pain somebody will feel pain too.”

On November twenty-third Myvett was shot to the hip and hand while he was standing at the corner of Mex and Amara Avenue. He celebrated his twenty second birthday in January. The police are looking for one of Myvett’s friends for questioning about his murder.

Belize need to set up a legitimate witness protection program to protect our people. I”m tired of hear people who are prime witness being killed or too afraid of testifying against these murderers. The government and the police need to come together and set up some kind of sanctuary for the people or we will forever be hearing the same thing on the news everyday, the Belizean people are tired of being confined to thier homes. I for one is too afraid to go home for vacation due to the crime situation there, this is all too sad!

It’s sad to hear that our youths of Belize are dying over nothing. The police know who are doing the killings but are scared of their own lives. The whole issue of why crime is increasing in Belize is because there’s no jobs for people, so every one is desperate. That’s the reason why the robbery rate has increased.
The justice system need to be fair and lock up the ‘real’ suspects that are killing. We all know that the real suspects comes from the bloods and crip gangs. The police knows where to look, but unfortunately choose to hesitate because their lives can be in danger, so the police makes private deals with suspects and throw the investigation under the rug. While the innocent victim families weep with no justice to be seen.
I believe that the real suspects are the police officers that are making deals with the gang members. Every one seems to have a say about what should be done to decrease the violence in Belize, but the government is not doing any thing about it.
These youths that are dying go through school to obtain an education and when finished have no jobs to look foward to because there’s none. In Belize it’s not the education or the degree that you have that make you have a job, it’s who you know. Which is so so sad and will continously bring forth corruption.
The key is to hold the government of Belize accountable for the mishaps, frustration and corruption of the people of Belize.
Praying won’t work – complaining won’t work, but to take action will work. How should we take action, by forming committee with all the political stakeholders and come to an agreement on how to start taking action, so that the Belizean children can see a bright and prosperous future ahead.
What the Prime Minister needs to do is stop negotiating with the Gang members and then all this bull will stop.Start executing these fools and stop letting them off these murder charges because as long as you keep letting them off if they kill the witness,then this is going to continue.This is a trend .How can’t you all see that.?

I cannot believe his sister, her brother did not kill anyone yet. These people are rediculous, like he is supposed to kill somone to be class as a bad person. He smoke week and a little robbery, wow girl, the last time I check those are crimes, as far as I can recall. Your brother is not a model citizean. These crimes are just too much in this small country. I think I will stay away from Belize for now, going on vacation but not to Belize.

who feels it knows indeed. had two cousins that were killed and both their lives went just like that. i want to take a trip to belize myself , and feel the same way. no way i’m going there with all that killing taking place. it’s like they have no regards or respect for life. such a shame.
