Single mothers complete Women’s Department skills training program

Forty-seven single mothers who took advantage of the Support Single Mothers in Belize City project will tonight be recognized at a commencement ceremony. They are the second set of women to complete the initiative, which is coordinated by the Women’s Department. The women trained for four months in four areas to better their chances of finding gainful employment. And as News Five learned from the Job Placement Officer, Elisa Castellanos, the women that go through the program are not just trained to do a job, they are also assisted in finding one.

“The ladies or the participants train for four months in one of four areas. Those are housekeeping, cosmetology, sewing and child care services. They train for four months and at the end of that, upon successful completion of the course then they will be aided by the Women’s Department to find meaningful employment. In addition to that they get training in work preparation and personal development. So with this cycle we did extensive orientation; it was almost two weeks long every day. They would come and get trained in personal financial management, budgeting, customer care service and really trying to enhance their skills and give them the best possible chance at securing employment.”
“We had fifty-seven graduates in cycle one and we had fifty-nine placements. But we did have a lot of challenges; it was very difficult to maintain those placement’s. However, with cycle two there was more training, the orientation was longer, and that was something that I think was needed. You know it’s the first time we did this project so we’re feeling our way through in terms of certain things we weren’t expecting such as some of the issues the participants come with. For some of them, this is the first time they would be holding a job. That is a transition that they need to go through and in the second cycle we tried to really be as prepared as possible for that.”
The women who completed the project can now look forward to having their job placements finalized within the next month or two.
I usually don’t comment on this site, but I must say this is a great thing that the Women’s Department is doing. Kudos to them and good luck to the single mom’s.
I hope they learn from this experience and it brings them success in becoming financially stable.
If you are considering a position in user support, you will need to have the following skills:
1. A Great Listener – Customers want you to completely understand their issue with the hope you will be able to assist them in resolving their problems quickly and efficiently. You will gain their respect if you let them completely explain their issue and respond in a positive manner. Take time to listen to their situation before jumping in with your resolution. Ask questions when you feel you have heard the issue and repeat some of their problems to let them know you were listening.
2. Professionalism – Having the ability to speak well and clearly over the phone or in person will be crucial in your interaction with the customer. A customer representative that acts in an un-professional manner will quickly become unwanted and only frustrate them further. You need to be a patient, professional and calming influence when interacting with customers at all times.
3. The Desire to Solve their Problem – User support requires you to have the fundamental sincerity to help others. Once you understand their issues, your desire to resolve them quickly and efficiently will make you the go to guy or gal for future needs. Your credibility and reputation will get you the visibility you need to move on in other areas.
