Pregnant woman and toddler hit by bus

Story PictureTraffic accidents are unfortunate whenever they occur and the story that follows has left a pregnant woman with constant nightmares and unable to walk. The expectant mother and her one year eight month baby were about to cross the street when they were knocked down by a bus. The incident occurred at the corner of Cemetery Road and West Collet Canal Street, near the Pound Yard Bridge. News Five’s Duane Moody and cameraman, Darrel Moguel found out more.

Duane Moody, Reporting
This past Saturday, eighteen year old, Felicia Chen and her one year old baby girl, Trina Teul, were heading to the stores when they were hit by a bus. The toddler ended under the bus, badly bruised and injured. The bus ran over Chen’s left leg. Chen is distraught and traumatized by the incident in which she could have lost the toddler and her unborn child.

Felicia Chen, Knocked-Down Victim
“I was going shopping because I was eight months pregnant so I had to buy the rest of stuff because I don’t know when I would have the baby. So, as I was about to cross the street, I had to watch both sides cause although it’s a one way street sometimes bicycle always ride up-stop. So I watch both ways and I made two cars pass; a small car and a pickup and when they passed I saw the bus all the way by the gas station so it gave me enough time to cross the street. I did cross the street because I just put my one year old on top of the sidewalk and as I was about to put my foot on the sidewalk I just felt something hit me hard right here. And the next thing I know I just looked and I saw my one year old underneath the bus. And she was, she was just vomiting everything up and then I tried to stop the bus but the bus didn’t want to stop and so my foot went underneath the tire and I was holding the tire and I was holding the tire and I told them to stop because I did not want them to ride over my baby.”

While the woman was all shaken up, what was appalling was her being accused by the driver of being at fault.”

Rosenda Chen, Sister
“Upon crossing, this driver from D & E Bus Company he came with a little speed and he took a big swerve and he totally knocked her. Upon knocking her she end up ripping off the skin from her left foot.”

Iris Gonzalez, Eyewitness
“To me, I seh di driver either mi di gaze, or neva mi di focus or something but I noh think dah di girl fault cause she already done crossing. By di time we halla bus, bus stop di man done knock di lady.”

Felicia Chen
“The driver came round and all he told me it wasn’t my fault, he didn’t even bother reverse or anything. He just came out and tell me it was my fault. Then he went back in and that’s when he reversed and when he reversed that’s when he took off my skin… the entire skin off my foot. He didn’t even assist me any at all, only the conductor he helped me.”

Eyewitness, Iris Gonzalez says she saw what happened and that along with other people, she ran to Chen’s rescue.

Iris Gonzalez
“With di speed ah weh di bus taking di curve all weh she could do dah just pick up her baby girl and freeze. By di time she freeze and we shout at di driver, di driver done already hit her and then she fell. When she fell, I went to di rescue and I tek di daughter out of her hand. At di moment di bus wheel was on her feet. When I took di baby from her about di time di di baby was bawling. When I took di baby from her di baby vomit up. I guess di frighteness weh di baby had, di baby ih vomit up and shit up. Ih back had wah scrape, ih feet was mash a little bit. You see di mark of di tire on di baby’s feet.”

Due to the impact, Chen went into labor and she thankfully gave birth to a healthy baby girl. And shortly after, she had surgery for her injured leg.

Felicia Chen
“The only thing I worry about is my baby girl because she is the one that is really traumatized in all this. I feel very sorry for her because she was born premature already, she is a sickly baby and now all of this that went on, I don’t know if she’ll ever get better after this. I just want to tell everybody whoever saw it what happen, please contact my mom or please go to the police station and make a report please because for one I wont have my life back and worst my daughter because she is in complete shock right now. Her whole foot is scraped up, her back is scraped up and her leg is swollen.”
