Vehicle sprayed with bullets in rush hour traffic

shooting 1A shooting incident shortly after eight o’clock this morning brought traffic on North Front Street to a screeching halt as two gunmen opened fire on a passing vehicle.  The intended target Daniel Faber and his girlfriend were taking their son to school when upon reaching in front of Lelani’s Superette two young men exited Rhaburn’s Alley and began shooting at them.  Faber’s brothers, Hubert Jr. and Jonathan were both gunned down in separate incidents in September of 2008 and June of last year.  News Five Isani Cayetano was on the scene immediately after the shooting and has this report.

Traffic was paralyzed and workers and primary school students from nearby Holy Redeemer scrambled to safety as Daniel Faber maneuvered the dark colored Toyota Camry through rush hour traffic to the corner of Pickstock and North Front Street.  Bullets penetrated the driver’s side window and the top of the vehicle.  Fortunately, no one was injured in the shooting but employees of Tropigas and the Belize Port Authority were visibly shaken. An eyewitness gave an off camera account.

“This morning I left home from Hattieville to come to work on North Front Street and as I was about to exit my vehicle I heard banging from behind me and when I looked around a vehicle was trying to, apparently trying to escape from gunshots.  I heard some shots and as I was about to exit I saw a young man pointing a black gun or what appears to be a gun in my direction and I closed back the door.  It looked to me a young fellow about maybe five feet, fair complexion and the car that was being pursued it hit my vehicle and hit another vehicle and that’s what I saw.”

Residents in the area are speculating that the shooting may have been an act of retaliation for a previous incident which occurred last night in the Pickstock area.

Isani Cayetano

“Can you tell me more or less how many shots were fired?”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“I heard about eight; I’m not sure, about eight.”

Isani Cayetano

“Do you know if the person, the shooter, is from this area or from this general vicinity?”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“I would never know I don’t live around here.  I live in Hattieville.”

Isani Cayetano

“You work here though.”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“I work here.”

Isani Cayetano

“Have there been any other incidences similar to what occurred this morning in this area of late?”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“No. No, this is the first I know of since I start to work here.”

Faber’s girlfriend later denied the allegations made by the residents saying that he was not involved in any altercation on Thursday night.  Following the shooting both men fled through Rhaburn’s Alley on bicycle.  Police recovered several spent shells and live rounds from the scene of the shooting and are looking for the suspects.  Reporting for News Five, Isani Cayetano.
