CitCo employee moves vendors who block streets
The regular Thursday afternoon bustle at the Queen Square Market got a little steamier just around midday today when a traffic officer and a City Council employee showed up on the West Collet Canal side from the Dean Street bridge and proceeded to forcibly remove a fruit vendor’s produce from his spot on the street side. News Five got images of him taking down the two tents. According to the vendors, the Traffic Department has not given them ample time to sell their fruits and because they have nowhere to go, they are being compulsorily removed. Two of the angry vendors told us what happened just moments before their makeshift stalls were dismantled.
Benjamin Franco, Fruit vendor, West Collet Canal
“When I have the tent to the pine City Hall officer come here, dehn bruk di tent and throw di pine like nothing right here to the truck and he say he have to move so he bruk di tent here and set it on di sidewalk and he say have to move it.”
Marion Ali
Did he say why?

Benjamin Franco
Benjamin Franco

Marion Ali
“Did you all get warnings before?”
Benjamin Franco
“Really no because we have to get something like a note. We noh get no notes, dehn just come, dehn noh even respect we many times ago.”
Franklin Ortiz, Fruit vendor

Franklin Ortiz
“Well yeah, one time.”
Marion Ali
“Soh they had given you time to relocate?”
Franklin Ortiz
“Yeah but where I gwein? I noh have nowhere to go.”
The traffic congestion on West Collet Canal has been a problem for years now and when News Five spoke with the Market Clerk, Bernadette Saldivar, she said the residents of the area have been complaining about the vendors for some time now. She said the vendors park their vehicles on the street at night and the complaints against them range from casual sexual engagements to noise pollution from gambling and loud music during the wee hours. Saldivar added that the wholesale vendors were allowed to sell their products up to ten in the morning but have been issued written notices from last October that they would have to move after ten o’clock because of the traffic congestion.

Once more the poor people feel the pinch. the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. but i know where we iwll be rick some day in the kingdom of God. The rich i dont know what they will do cause they love for money wil not take them there
They need to move them from East Collet Canal too.Have you guys seen how horrible those canal sides look? Its a damn shame.
I’ve been reading these comments on Channel 5 and so many people seem to have this oh well, God will take care of this and that, justice will prevail in heaven, etc.
I think this kind of thinking is what keeps us behind. It irriates me. We need to pretend or believe that God doesn’t exist at least for a moment and know that all we have is LIFE ON EARTH. Then let’s proceed and demand justice HERE and NOW! Don’t wait to get your riches in heaven. Ask yourself, how can I find my riches today! Tomorrow! while I’m breathing! Don’t wallow in your poverty in the hope that someday you’ll find your rewards.
Of if you really do want to stick with your faith in God, why don’t you frame your mind this way, God demands that you seek justice during your life on earth. I think that’s a good option for you believers out there. God wants you to find your just desserts now!
Tyadia you obviously lack faith in Gods just rewards. If you read the bible closely he ask not to fashion yourself after this world and seek its riches rather to seek him. Obviously the problem by the canal is lack of organization and the inability for belizeans to help each other out. As GOD would like compassion, love, understanding and respect is needed to have solutions to these kinds of probelms. Do you sincerely believe we can find that with the kind of individuals who govern us presently. I would rather leave the justice up to God than fight with these people where nothing good comes from it
