Irregularities found with police assistance in Galvez murder case

Christopher Galvez

Christopher Galvez

The murder of Christopher Galvez on the night of December twenty-second, 2009 grabbed the headlines and spurned serious allegations at members of the Police Department. His homicide transformed members of his family into advocates against violence throughout the country. His aunt Yolanda Schakron has been most outspoken against the way the case has been handled by the department and has spoken on several occasions about intimidation and threats her family has received since Galvez’s murder.  No one is sure what direction the case will take, but it will all unravel on Friday morning at ten.  The Ministry of National Security will hold a press briefing and will reveal the findings of the inquiry, which was ordered by the Minister of National Security, Carlos Perdomo.  It’s all being kept under wraps but News Five can confirm that the ministerial committee has found irregularities in the way police rendered assistance to the victim.  One of the four recommendations that we have been privy to is that the Police Department now train their officers in first aid. The Galvez family was told of the findings, but is not at all pleased. More on this tomorrow.

Billions (with a B) spent on home affairs and other expense areas in Belize in the last twelve years and what do we get – nothing more than a corrupt and ever incompetent police force. Would BZ$1.4 million help? Perhaps the attorney for GoB could donate her earnings to building the capacity of the police force in Belize …

  2. maddyvandijk says:

You would think that one of the top three things that the police were trained for is “first aid”, what a lousy system run by incompetents.
Families that lost loved one’s should protest non-stop against the police department for real justice, and improvement in their system.

  3. CONCERNED says:

What is this country coming to? The Justice system sucks! The Police covers up or sweeps things under the rug all the time. I personally can say such, as i have a friend who is a Police officer and he tells me about the corruption that takes place. I tell you the things people, (even the officers in uniforms) would do for a lil bit of $. I tell you it is funny th John Crow dance they wud do for a buck! However, they may have gotten away in this world, but God sees all things. People, please note he doesn’t like UGLY!!! R.I.P Chris……. We miss you! I Hope the Family can have some kinda closure.

When did we become independent? 1981! Social and economic modernization can be an excruciatingly painful process during post colonization. We’re making advances, slowly but surely.

Good job, Perdomo for calling a press conference. And good job, for recommending the first aid training. Baby steps forward…

i wish more belizeans would have the courage and strenght to stand up for corruption and injustices like ms schakron. the only way we will change the status quo is to challenge it and stop accepting mediocraty from our leaders and government officials.

  6. ceecee! says:

i wish this story would hurry up and break because only then people will see that this story is nothing close to what they are thinking it is.Like i said before…most of these kids getting killed are not as innocent as people might want to believe….but i will sit back and wait for the drama to unfold.

  7. pay back says:

THESE COPS DO PLAY THIS KIND OF GAME,WHEN THE TWO KIDS WAS GUNNED DOWN IN ST MARTIN’S AREA THE COP WHO WAS INVESTIGATING THE CASE HAD A PERSONAL BEEF WITH THE CHILD FATHER HE NEVER VISITED HIM,DAYS AFTER HE CALL AND ASK HIM TO COME IN AND GIVE A STATEMENT,SIX MONTHS LATER THE CASE WAS THROWN OUT FOR A DOUBLE MURDER IN BROAD DAY LIGHT,THESE COPS GOT TO STOP HOLD PERSONAL BEEF WITH PEOPLE THEY HAD A RUNNINGS WITH BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE THE PUBLIC CAN TURN TO,THOSE COPS NEED COUNSELING TO GET OVER THOSE ISSUES THEY PICKED UP ON THE JOB.

  8. Faye says:

Our government/police force t is a group of incompetent b…. These “standard three” idiots that we have running around pretending to be police officers are just a disgrace. Now I am not one for corruption but we must admit that both government parties are corrupt but as I always say I would prefer people who know how to represent me as a Belizean citizen. I cannot deal with this government because all the ministers of government are idiots and how can we expect them to adequately run this country. I give up! Its time to leave this country.

  9. marie says:

I agree with Faye about both government been corrupt ” but they are not idiot they are making money everything they save is for them for their pocket’s we all can see they change cars like change underwaer so they are gething reach and we the people of belize are suffering ‘
and all police are corrupt they just see a little money and they do what ever gangs ask so this will never change we know that” people with money pay the police and police just sherup’
I’m sorry about this Galvez who was murder and still police do nothing’

  10. pay back says:

JEFFRIES IS NOT A BAD COMPOL BUT THERE IS A LOT WORKING AROUND HIM THAT IS UNDERMINING HIS JOB AND IT’S INTENTENTIONAL.

  11. cg says:

if the corruption and crimes are coming from the top, of course there will be those at the bottom rotten enough to take them. it is a sad case, but no matter how much you try to do away with the bad, they somehow still find their way in there. these things will never really stop unfortunately for men have ruled men to their destruction. 2 Timothy 3:2-5

  12. WILLIAM FRIDA says:

A couple of years ago I was hearing a NPR radio program and they had on a professor
On.He had conducted a report on why third world countries and most
Of Central America have a problem with corrupted within its police and civic services what they
Found was that (1) law enforcement was always considered a lesser job than possibly a bank teller
Or someone working in a office (2) Most police officers did not have a high school diploma or any type of higher education therefore police officers don’t have good verbal and communication skills and lack writing and comprehensive ability (3) law enforcement always has a smaller budget than lets says a bigger budget for buying new vehicles for all the Government employees /managers.(4) police officer salaries were comparable To minimum wage , these factors create inept and unprofessional officers when asked about how Third world countries could pay for a professional police force ,his answer was that most countries are capable of paying for this but most likely the decision makers usually make sure that they are taken care of before any public services are financed

  13. Empress says:

POLICE POLICE POLICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! again Mrs Yolanda you know what you should do you and your Brother you know who did it you won’t get no justice out there cause this government is fos they are terrible and we don’t have a justice system no more same way that little boy is living with out his dad. I have a son and i tell you anything would happen to him and i know who do it i won’t let justice take place I will get revenge………This gov have to go they ARE DOING LONE r….

  14. Tyadia says:

Thank you for that William Frida! How can you demand so much from someone by only paying minimum wage salaries? How many of you people lambasting the police would put yourselves in their shoes and take on their duties for the meager salaries they earn???

  15. Elgin Martinez says:

Stop blaming the Police. What about some of these parents start taking resposibility for their kids actions. If you point a gun at me you’re getting burn point blank.

  16. Bway Blue says:

I think that this country have a lot of people who has nothing to do but sit around and criticize the work of the police. if the people making these comments believe that they can do a better job then why not, get their stupid @$$ up and go join the police force and make a difference other than criticize. unless u put ur self in the shoes of an officer, you have no idea what it is like out there being one. but of course, they have time to talk about being STANDARD THREE IMCOMPETENCE. and blaming them for everything that goes bad in the justice system. ya’ll need to stop watch these CSI and law enforcement shows on TV Belize aint the only country with the problem so snap back into reality and quit being a bunch of idiots. police is power and will continue to be the power in the country, if we decide to one day not go to work, no business place in this country will open their doors, and no school will open, and lets see how ya’ll FOOLS will live. our family will be safe and ya’ll will be caged in your houses pleaing for police to return to work so ya’ll life can be normal again….its called REALITY face it.
