Shooting victim’s leg amputated at the knee

In another shooting in Orange Walk, last Friday an enraged villager in Santa Cruz, shot a man in the foot with his licensed firearm.  You’d think all would be well for the victim after a few hours of medical treatment right? Wrong.  It turns out that life will never be the same again for Alido Martinez as he had to be amputated at the knee of the injured foot.  Life will also change for the accused, Gabriel Castillo, who now faces a charge of Maim and a jury who will decide his fate.  But the beef according to Officer Commanding Orange Walk Police, Superintendent Joseph Myvette, was over that prized diminishing asset – land.

“The allegations are that it was over a land issue about a mile and a half from Santa Cruz village. Upon the police receiving the report, the injured party was already at the hospital so the investigation was just taken up from there. However the injured party was shot in his left knee and it had to be amputated. We have since brought charges against Gabriel Castillo for Maim and also there’s another charge pending of a previous incident in which he had pulled his shotgun at the same victim.”

“Is this shotgun a licensed shotgun?”

“Yes, we believe it is. This was not recovered. Police did search but this weapon has not been recovered as it is alleged to have been haned to someone else after the incident.”

“Certainly those recommendations will be made.”

Gabriel Castillo is expected in the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
