Guatemalan squatters ordered to move from land
Thirty-seven families, most of whom are Guatemalans, are being ordered to move from land which they now occupy at Mile forty on the Western Highway. Today officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources visited the private property and told the families that they will have to relocate because the land is privately owned. News Five was told that the owner, a Taiwanese businessman, died after clearing the area he called Capital Gardens. He had reportedly planned several years ago to construct a mall and other amenities. One of the current residents told News Five off camera today that she and her family built their wooden house on the land two years ago after a promise by the U.D.P. Cayo South Area Representative. The lady alleges that during the last political campaign, leading up to the 2008 General Elections, Ramon Witz gave them and some Belizean farmers permission to reside on the land. But she could not say how long they were allowed to squat on the property. It is not clear if the title holder has any relatives to make claims on the land but what we did pick up is that the squatters have unofficially renamed the area Valle Nuevo or New Valley. We tried to contact the man the family says facilitated them in the process, a man they called Mr. Hernandez, but he hung up on us. We will follow up on this story on Friday.

that’s what i’m talking about. immigrants from guatemala come and joins the campaign for politicianjust to for land and when we belizean have to beg the lands department for a piece of our own jewel, this really pisses me off. from i was a kid i keep seeing this. no wonder the cross the border to cut xate cause they know we take things from granted to easy. belizeans should be first for example. Mr. Montero promised us when capigning that he’ll give us a piece of land when he settle. now we’ve visited him alot of time and all he says come back next wednessday. how’s that, that’s why i no longer will vote for no party. i had to stop eating dinner to meet him at my door just to make him giveus his back later.
Whatever legal hangs-ups are involved here, I hope we treat these human beings with dignity and make an effort to ensure that they and their children are safe after a possible relocation.
Here we go again Belize,corruption,corruption,corruption.
here we go again. Belizeans last immigrants first. dats the way it goes.
in the past, people squat on any land they choose, government tells them they are squatting and they are relocated or “given” land to live. I’m a 32 yrs, and can’t get a piece of land yet!
think i’ll go “ini-mini-mo” and pick a spot to squat, tha’ll be the only way i’ll get land. I’m not hating on the squatters, it’s the system that allows flexibility for non-Belizeans to get land before i can!
Look at the bigger picture everyone. At the rate at which Guatemalans are moving in and squatting on land illegally we really will be “one people with common aspirations” to quote our foreign minister. If we, the true-born Belizeans, don’t rise up and demand the banning of immigration of a people from a country that refuses to recognise our very existence then come time for the referendum we shouldn’t be surprised at an outcome in favour of the ICJ.
Here’s a little history to clarify my point. When Hitler wanted to annex a part of Czechoslovakia he justified it by saying that there was a large German population on the Czech side of the boarder. When the Republic of Ireland was formed Northern Ireland broke off because the people there said they were British not Irish. See my point. This is an old tactic used by countries to justify territorial claims and the Guat. government is using it to a tee while ours does nothing and we remain silent.
Unless we begin to jial this politician for promising and lying just to get a vote these occurances will not stop. i am sure that there are Belizean families who die trying to get a piece of house lot an these imiigrants just squatt.
This has to stop by us
no wonder that just before general elections lots of guatemalans nationalize belizean . that is to vote. the belizean law states that no national that recognize not the soverienty of belize can or shall get to be belizean. but again corruption corruption .
we belizean is time to stand up and make those that should be working for us work. (politicians)
they are there to serve us , once that is not fulfilled get them out no matter if thier time is not yet done.
Enough of this BS with politician and illegal immigrants, our own Belizean people can’t even get a piece of property or legal documents without the run around and here is government doing what they want with ohter people’s property. Why didn’t this so-called representative house these immigrants in his house if he wanted to appear that humanitarian. If it was a Belizean in there country, they would have been escorted but with A BULLLET TO THERE HEAD.
