Robbers escape with cash from Social Security Board

social security boardLate this afternoon, the latest robbery was reported. It took place at the offices of Social Security Board in the city. The thieves were on time for the mid month payments that follows pay day. News Five’s Marion Ali has the details on the most recent robbery of a yet undisclosed amount of money.

Sometime after four o’clock this evening, the Social Security Board’s Belize City office on Princess Margaret Drive became the most recent target for city thieves wanting to come by some quick bucks.  And while the exact amount stolen is not yet clear, the planning seems to have been timed right.  We say that because normally the fourteenth of every month is the deadline for employers to pay the contributions for their staff.  But since this month the fourteenth fell on a Sunday, the next nearest day, which was today, was that deadline.

And whomever might have tipped off the robbers did a good job because they reportedly entered from through a door at the rear of the building.  Unofficial information to News Five is that two armed thieves, one with a mask and the other with a dread hat, entered through the back door and proceeded to the two cashiers and held them up at gunpoint before exiting through the same door with an undisclosed amount of money.  A doctor from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital next-door had to be called over to do a check-up on the traumatized cashiers.

The Social Security offices have surveillance cameras indoors, and those are being reviewed by police to determine if they picked up anything of significance of the incident.  Marion Ali for News Five.
