Leader of the opposition condemns PM’s language in the House

John Briceno

The language used in the House of Representatives on Monday by Prime Minister Dean Barrow in a feisty exchange with the former Prime Minister Said Musa, resonated on the airwaves this morning and has been the topic of conversation around many tables since they were uttered. Generally, people were rattled and find the “j” word unparliamentarily. We asked the Leader of the Opposition, John Briceño, who has been in the House for at least seventeen years, what he thought of the PM’s performance.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“Whenever you believe that the prime minister has reached a new low with his behavior at the National Assembly, he always goes even lower. Today was an example of that same behavior; this vulgar behavior of the prime minister in the National Assembly. There’s a certain level of respect that is expected in the National Assembly from all members in the House. We have had several prime ministers, we have never seen Mr. Price behave that way, not even his former leader the Right Honorable Manuel Esquivel behave in such fashion nor the Right honorable Said Musa behave in the fashion that the now prime minister is behaving. I think what was sad was that—in a way luckily, we had some students visiting the National Assembly that had just left when he got up and started to display this arrogance and this vulgarity in the National Assembly. I would hope that the prime minister could take some time off and to listen to his behavior and I am sure that he would try to hopefully behave in a more parliamentarian fashion in our National Assembly.”

This afternoon, the People’s United Party said that when the proceedings of the House of Representatives arrive at a point where control is being lost it is the Speaker, using the standing orders, who must restore order. The Opposition also called on the PM to apologize to members of the House and to Belizeans at the next House sitting.

When did the Honourable House become Brad’s Bar Room? Barrow’s behaviour is completely disgraceful.

  2. Bulba Martinez says:

Hogwash, the Prime Minister need to apologize to the Belizean people ASAP for his ignorant and childish behaviour. Maybe he need to step down and go back into the Court Room and act the fool as expected. I change mi mind again after all the arrogance surrounding UDP members lately. What a disappointment and embarrassment to our country.

Quoting briceno: “Whenever you believe that the prime minister has reached a new low with his behavior at the National Assembly, he always goes even lower”.
If you are in defense of the reputation of parliament then before you approached the media you should
Have chosen squeaky clean words, devoid of insults to get your point across. Yet compelled to spread the parliament DNA far and wide, you could not resist the opportunity to use cheap shots to make a respectable point.

sadly, history has a way of repeating itself….

  4. Brenton says:

When we have the leader of our country downgrading hisself to the lowest level using obscene languages in a House of Representative, it shows that he just do not care about the people of this country. All of Hon. Dean Barrow actions will transend onto the wider community and will stimulate more crime and violence. Then we wonder why crime is increasing, when the head of our country is not setting an example for others.

  5. BELIZEAN PRIDE says:

i agreee with you johny even do i’m not a pup but and ex udp voter. with this behavior the pm should apologize on national tv to all belizeans for this vulgarity. school children and other ranged students look at any pm as a person who is soppused to be exemplary of good faith but with this, damn! we’re really disgraced.

  6. janus says:

As the leader of the country the Prime Minister needs to be above reproach in all of his official duties, this includes house sittings. What kind of example will this tirade/outburst show to the younger generation. If the younger generation are supposed to follow the example of our leaders, is it any wonder that the country is going down the tubes.

  7. ggp says:

  8. Stephen M. says:

Indeed a behaviour from our leader is very embarrassing to us as a nation. Keep those comments behind close door or to himself.

  9. Edwin Torres EX PC 520 says:

Nobody wants to seem weak in this world. So we find ways to appear strong. Some of us use the force of our emotions to manipulate people, some use money to control people, and some use words and intellect to intimidate, as in the case of our PM. Although these create an illusion of Strength, they are signs of weakness.
True strength comes from having the courage to accept your limitations and being humble and acknowledging our need and dependence on God and others.
That said, I hope PM Borrow will be humble enough to accept he is wrong and do the right thing-An Apology is in order! Arrogance will bring good nothing to him, but might give him a free ticket as the leader of the opposition in the next few months.

  10. cg says:

  17. John Boy/Carson, California says:

The year is 2010 , and not 1960.Belizeans are more intellent.I am not saying that British Hondurans was not intellegent back then, but we had that colonal mentality.Today we are an Indpendent nation , and with technology as it is today we are more exposed to the world.Things we accepted yesterday we will not accept today.I remember back in the day when Shubu would get on the rostrum and used profanity. That type of behavior I would expect from a Easy Glenn , or a Red Man , or some other illeterate street thug.I do not expect that from The Rt Honorable Dean Oliver Barrow.

  18. ab says:

LANGUAGE WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE……..I HAVE WORK WITH A ALOT OF PEOPLE BUT TO BE HONEST VULGARITY DEMEENS YOR CHARACTER…..ANYWAYS IF IT COMES FROM THE LEADER YOU CAN SEE WHY ALL ARE SAME ….. BE LEADER BUT LEAD TO DO THE RIGHT THING ……..

  19. maddyvandijk says:

There are two major political parties in Belize, PUP and the UDP. Both have been given chances after chances by the people of Belize to make that country better, although some things have changed throughout the history of politics in Belize things remain the same even today.

So weather Barrow is in power or Musa is in power the country will move forward with very little progress. Musa is no better than Barrow as a leader, Musa is bound by his own ideology which will destroy your nation even more so. All the leaders in Belize need to be eradicated and replaced with new leaders not related to anyone involved in politics in Belize today.

Belize need real, visible changes, but that would take guts and conviction, two things Musa and barrow are incapable of. The Belizean leaders are weak and outmatched politically to accomplish anything substantive, their “strategy” essentially boiling down to whining a thrash fight over a microphone.

  20. Empress says:

  22. Elgin says:

You are the Jakass Barrow, you’re the one who lost your respect for the people of Belize. You need to step down.

  23. Lady S says:

Its such a shame on this Government,Dean Barrow need to be polite to members of the staff in the chambers and don’t behave like an illiterate.Mr. Barrow is a smart man to my knowledge but as for that day as in the house and calling an individual a Jackass its complete disgrace to Belizean people. He should remember that we are on the streaming internet and can be viewed globally.Mr.Barrow its a shame on you and your son Shyne.Father like son not far from each other, its a pity in life that all your dark shadows has been coming out to light.Ignorant no play no role in life.Be wise Barrow and get your act together.
