Was Sanchez a rogue cop?
While Police Corporal Gavin Sanchez swore to protect and serve the Belizean public, he had several high profile incidents on record. On several occasions Sanchez had been involved in shooting incidents with known criminals while on and off duty. Today Commissioner of Police Crispin Jeffries commented on the circumstances the slain officer may have found himself in.
Jose Sanchez
“We found at least three incidents where he shot a person and one incident where a resident of Iguana Street said he was drunk.”
Crispin Jeffries, Commissioner of Police
“There are certain functions that you perform as a police officer and there are those you come up against who want to hold you and make you a villain because of the things you need to do. The corporal in charge, the police officer that we are talking about or that you are referring to has in fact been a part of one of those aggressive street units in the past in Belize and he had to take on some of these responsibilities. But it is these type of situations that warrant or get that kind of response from people accusing you and making allegations against you. I did not hear you say about the time when he almost lost his life in an incident when somebody shot at him and he has been shot at several time too so we don‘t want to make him into something other than he is but the facts will come out as the investigation continues.”
Jose Sanchez
“If we could just detract from this particular case, there are instances when officers—I guess you would recognize—have been too much, I guess in the field have been too much complaints of violence.”
Crispin Jeffries
“Are you talking about me?”
Jose Sanchez
“Perhaps you have had that experience in that past yourself Mr. Jeffries, but what is the recourse? How can—is there counseling? What do you do when you recognize those symptoms?”
Crispin Jeffries
I think the effort to address what is in the public domain as rogue cops is something that we’ve always dealt with. My predecessor and his predecessors were always involved in dealing with those police officers who go outside of the law.”
In December of 2007, Sanchez fired three shots at Jarrett Crawford, one bullet caught him in the abdomen. Crawford was wanted for robberies and Sanchez claimed he pointed a firearm at him. In April of 2008, witnesses claimed that Sanchez was drunk and after crashing his car into a drain on Iguana Street. After exiting the car, he opened fire on a passerby, Lionel Sampson. Sampson was shot on his left leg and on his right hand. In that incident Sanchez said that Sampson tried to shoot him when he was driving past him. And in July of 2009, our records show that Sampson shot Gilroy Garnett on his right thigh while on Freetown Road. Sanchez said that Garnett punched him after he recognized him as a man wanted for burglary. According to Jeffries the incidents involving Sanchez were still under investigation at the time of his death.
sure he will be dealt with! all that will come out of this investigation is that the shooting was justifiable and that he was performing his duties as a cop. how should we the public trust our own police force when they are the once inflicting fear in the community. yet nothing is done to sanction their action
True fact… there should be more monitoring on officers on street . i have known of a PC who crashed a next vehicle. He was drunk but on the impact alcohol was brunt to consciousness where he was blaming two innocent people who had just finish make a church sale and were on their way to buy butane gas. He went and put bottles of beers on victims car. imagine…. he was free and they had to pay a thousand and more… ayyy what is happening ? if i knew of this before i would suggest two the victim to do a alcohol test at a lab same time ….. will c who gets blame…Please Listen to us ! MORE SANCTION ON PC
Poor Jeffries…this man make absolutely no sense when he opens his mouth. Can the PM please retire this man to pature…this man brain drain and have no idea how to clean up his department and run it effectively.
Off Duty police officers should not work special duties for extra hustling
WHO THE CAP FITS LET THEM WEAR IT. RIGHT? WELL LISTEN WHEN HE ANSWERS THE QUESTION “If we could just detract from this particular case, there are instances when officers—I guess you would recognize—have been too much, I guess in the field have been too much complaints of violence.”
Crispin Jeffries
“Are you talking about me?”
the question was not for him but giulty mind made him include particularly himself.
well it is very sad to hear what is going on with this situation. now they are saying he is a rouge cop but when he is living nobody knows that , until when he met his demise. which means lots of things are happening within the police department which are all cover up .indeed when people are saying the cop murder that’s means, is a true fact. but memba you got ur family too . lots of love ones are grieving right now especially the wife and sad news about the two babies left behind with out a father. as a matter of fact, off duty police are not suppose to do extra hustling. why they are doing this job give those job to those needed ppl .
wake up belizean people police are revealing the truth now what more we can do and to who we can turn to . nobody ! we just need to revenge .
i think tis good that Jeffy broke up the group of rogue cops. one by one they are dying like flies. love him or hate him, give him credit for being honest. he was once roguish
A rogue cop or not the man is dead in a suspicious manner, with three witnesses, two of which the victim had an altercation with prior to his death, and one who killed him in room.
Was he really a deceitful unscrupulous scoundrel who was usually involved in treacherous underhanded activities?
Since his superiors knew of his indecent behavior and did nothing about it, they should be fired from their positions for their incompentency.
I believe that these cops had some difference .
