Tara Li Sanchez says her husband didn’t have to die

The autopsy of slain police corporal Gavin Sanchez was conducted this afternoon at the K.H.M.H. morgue. Of the number of bullets which penetrated Sanchez’s body during the shooting on Thursday morning at the police precinct at San Pedro, one proved to be fatal. News Five spoke with Tara Li Sanchez, wife of the deceased officer, who was present during the post-mortem examination.

“There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this particular incident. Some people are saying that there may have been an excessive use of force for a situation like that which could have been resolved otherwise. Can you share with us your with us your opinion, your position on what took place?”

“Okay. From all di different stories dehn weh I hear what I could put together is dis right. Sergeant Reyes neva had to kill Andre Sanchez, never had to kill ah. Ih shoot ah one time inna ih foot already and he had two B.D.F. officers with ah if dehn claim say Andre mih drunk I noh know cause I neva mih di deh but ah mean if you dah wah sergeant and you have two B.D.F. officers wid you, you gwein go control one person, one man weh mussy have your built come on two B.D.F. and one sergeant could handle Andre. You, if Andre whap you inna your head with a pipe, he had on ih bulletproof vest you wah shot ah yes, but why shoot ah six times?”

“Well what I would say that I know that every incident there must be an investigation and there will be a file that will be prepared. After all the evidence has been collected there will be two investigations running parallel; one from the criminal side and one from the internal side to see if there is any shortcoming and I could really assure you all that every aspect will be looked into and whatever needs to be done will be done.”
Sanchez’s family has raised concerns over measures the police department has taken in dealing with the incident as they contend that Sergeant Paulino Reyes has still not been placed on interdiction pending the outcome of the investigation.
I totally agree he did not have to die. That Officer could have been shot in the leg or arm to subdue him, 6 shots means I want you dead.
i find it very hard to believe what they are saying about andre he was in my class at high school and he was a very cool dude who troubled no one sad to see what one of his colleague did to him who was suppose to protect him who can you trust
Why did Cpl. Sanchez have on a bullet-proof vest ? He had been partying and is reported to have been drunk. Was is his habit to go out wearing a bullet-proof vest ? If he put it on after being in the police station, what did he have in his mind that made him put it on ? I am surprised no-one has brought this up.
it is so sad the way this officer die.1 bullet was good enough i do not see why his fellow officer had to kill him like that.it does not look nor sound justifiable to me.
I just read on Belize Times news paper the investigation started. I think they should get qualified people to do this investigation. What is this Jame Magdaleno qualification what does he have a degree in. Please this is the 21st century. We need hard evidence DNA, Forensic and much more We need do not need report from some police men who get a job because of who they kiss up to.
The Commissioner of Police need to retire thats what! If he cant control murdering in his own backyard, how then can he handle the height of crime rate in Belize. Just b4 election last, he acted like a big puppet for the Government by trying to control Belizeans from demonstrating for which is right, however, he retaliated with extreme forces nevertheless, so then, if he was a grave example for the Police force back then, why wouldn’t the officers follow his example now and not harm each other?????? Commissioner Crispin Jefferies needs to resign!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i agree with you mary fuller, we need qualitfied personel to do the investigations, instead of some high school gruaduate police investigators. bet this guys only reach high school i feel we need people who knows about dna, and other technicall advance porceedures to finally bring out a verditct that can people say o.k that was the case truth. just to let you guys know a little. once in belize city my brother’s pickup was burglarized to and extend disgust and he went to open the door when he saw what happen. he called police, they came and did thier cheap dust thing for finger prints and guess what they said no finger prints found on the door handle. crazy thing and my brother open it by the handle since the glass window was shatters. very unprofessionals right?

lets say that my comment is not biased. But i am taking no sides its obvious that no one had to die. but who knows the intentions of the deceased. The incident that took place on Iguana Street had there not been so many eyewitnesses on the scene wouldn’t cpl. sanchez have shoot to kill as he fears his life was in jeopardy. His attacker “according to him” was already under a car and wasn’t armed so why did he have to shoot him the attacker was in no position to shoot and there were so many ppl there including family members. Did anyone come to the conclusion that the officer used excessive force on this young man. He was transferred after the incident was he ever interdicted? he wasn’t even charged and nothing came out of this. I feel for his wife and children but we gotta be real people we cannot just take sides be harsh. who knows what was the history of these officers relationship? who knows what exactly happened in that precinct? the Police department is corrupt not all officers but can we honestly stand there and just point fingers do we feel the same way others feel when the police themselves take the lives of others loved ones? did the wife feel the way the mother of that shooting victim fell when she got no justice knowing that her son didn’t have to get shot and still went to prison for a gun the cpl claimed the attacker had and he didn’t even have a wound to show? before we blast each other lets think back and be fair we are all human beings crying out for one common thing justice, peace and a better Belize.

Only God knows what transpired between the two but it’s very sad and this is showing that the Police Department really needs to shape up. Rest In Peace Bro.
Nobody kill a cop because he is a little drunk. I realy think that reyes will have been send to the justice
as soon as possible. Cops dont kill other cops. There is now in the police a cop killer, you think that someone can trust that police force now.
that investigation have to be made by real professionnel, to get out all the circonstance of that killing.

We all know how this case will end; Reyes will be found not guilty.
The police will say that the victim pulled a gun and fired shots, and he was shot in defense, end of story.

it’s true officer reyes no suppose to shot him 9 times.but nobody is mentioning that officer reyes act in self defence what will you do if you are in that position won’t you do the same action it’s one or the other so let’s look on both sides not only one side plis.everybody here on the island knows very good that the officer act in self defence
Shame and disgrace on our police department! If they cannot solve something that was done in public, what problems can they solve then? I love my country really bad but sad to say we are heading down the wrong road! We can leave things in dark and hide the truth, but remember murderes, your time is coming. !!!!!!!
This makes no sense…Sanchez probably had the vest on because he knew what Reyes was up to. We dont know why Reyes killed this man but we do know that he was not trying to stop him, he WAS TRYING TO KILL him and he did just that.
