Harold Crooks absconds to Bermuda

Harold Crooks

Harold Crooks

We have reported that Harold Crooks, the Jamaican consultant, who was commissioned to evaluate the police force and make recommendations for its improvement, is wanted by Jamaica for sex related offences of an under-aged girl. According to the Jamaica Observer, Crooks who is also the former commandant of the Island’s Special Constabulary Force (ISCF), is believed to be holed up in Bermuda since fleeing the island on March 17.

The newspaper reports that the Jamaican police is not ruling out an extradition request or Interpol intervention. Crooks maintains that he has no confidence in the justice system and that he would die in prison in his country if he is convicted. The newspaper also reports that Crooks holds a US passport which would complicate any extradition request since there is a dispute between the US and Jamaica over Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, a Jamaican strongman who is wanted on charges of alleged gun and drug trafficking.

Crooks is a former security advisor to the Government of Jamaica and has also worked with the United Nations. On the local front, parts of his recommendations on the police department have been put into practice and as recent as this Friday in the budget debate in the House, the Minister of National Security, Carlos Perdomo said other areas will be implemented.
