Wet highway causes accident that injured Sharmane Dawson

April8-45There is another accident to report, it occurred on the Western Highway this afternoon at mile forty-one, in the area that residents have dubbed Harmonyville. The victim, thirty three year old Sharmane Dawson, was lucky to survive the accident which totaled her sport utility vehicle.  According to witnesses at the scene, Dawson was heading towards Belmopan in the albeit sunny day, but intermittent showers made the road slick.  And that is what they believed caused the vehicle to spin and flip on the highway.  Her Ford Expedition did not hit oncoming traffic but spun off the highway where it came to a complete stop.  Dawson was injured in her face and body.  Drivers who were passing by stopped to assist until help arrived.  Unfortunately, she had to wait for an ambulance to come all the way from Spanish Lookout.  Some persons at the scene told News Five the capital needs more ambulances at its disposal.

“Actually I just happened upon the scene couple minutes after it happened. I did not really see what went on. My concern is we’ve been here half an hour and police just got here; some kind of misinformation I don’t know. And the ambulance, we’re waiting for the ambulance from Spanish Lookout because I understand that there’s none in Belmopan. So that’s my concern.”

Jose Sanchez

“You think it’s time then maybe that there should be an ambulance in Belmopan?”

Carol Banner

“There should be more than one ambulance in Belmopan. I think we need to work towards that.”

There is one ambulance in Belmopan and it was being used as part of the delegation that followed the Queen’s Relay Baton.

If we could use a Prado as an ambulance, be sure, we could have at least 10 in Bmp

Thank god Sharmane is only brused. She was lucky. However motorist in general should be extremely careful and go slooow when the roads are moist.

ambulance is a major priority that gov. should not hesitate to invest. we need more in the country for our regional clinics too. imagine a big disaster what would limited ambulance do. God willing no major disaster hit us this year. but gov. should buy more and it’s gonna benefit the country in total.

  5. WILLIAM FRIDA says:

maybe they can ask the deputy prime minister to sell on of his beach front properties he’s been accumulating in Corozal to buy more Ambulances .

The lack of a proper fleet of ambulance in this country is unacceptable. Some of the ambulance don’t even have proper equipments, such a shame on the Health Service, if we cannot take our Health Service serious what else would we take lightly.

Thank goodness Ms. Dawson is alive. I too lost a very loving brother to the the poor response of ambulance & d lack of proper equipments inside, such a shame, we Belizeans deserve better treatment than this.

I would suggest we invest big time in our Health Care even if we have to BEG internationally for support.

Health care in the sense of disaster is especially needed in Belize, I always hear government giving money to individuals who support their party for houses, but the issue of health is something that is rarely or never spoken. This is a community issue that needs to be addressed 1st. The hospitals are outdated without proper equipment and medicine and help is late to arrive. Every town and village should have an available ambulance for situations like this. If Belize doesn’t have the money to buy them, they shouldn’t be too proud to beg their counterparts in the US/Mex, I know for a fact that they would be more than willing to send new ones or fleets that they are getting to retire which are still useable.

thank goodness she is gonna be alright. drivers need to take extreme care on these highways especially when it is raining, or a slight drizzle for that matter. too many times accidents can be avoided.
