Commuters tackle robbers armed with grenade… and win!

Insp. Dinsdale Thompson

Insp. Dinsdale Thompson

Heading west, two men presumably Guatemalans, tried to carry out a dangerous robbery on a D and E Bus from San Ignacio to Benque Viejo del Carmen around seven-fifteen on Sunday night.  The incident was botched by a bold bus crew and passengers who bravely took on the two armed men.  In the process, one of the thieves was killed and the other was pushed off the bus, with what he claimed was a hand grenade, still in his hand.  Before the attack, they had jacked the conductor’s money bag, containing seven hundred and eighty four dollars and money and jewelry from the passengers. But after they were overwhelmed by the passengers, one of the robbers escaped with the grenade but not the loot.  It was an incident that resulted in a positive twist of faith for a busload of twenty-five who could have ended up in deep peril, had things gone wrong.  Deputy Officer in Charge at the San Ignacio Police Station, Inspector Dinsdale Thompson says the brazen thieves met their match on Sunday night.

Inspector Dinsdale Thompson, Deputy O.C., San Ignacio

“They get on by Clarissa Falls junction by Benque Viejo Road just before Succotz Village.  Reports are that one of them had a .22 pistol.  The other had what he claimed to be a grenade.  The one that had the .22 pistol was overcome by the conductor of the bus line.  We have so far found out that the injuries appear to be a stab wound.  We’re still looking at that.  However, we feel good that he was accosted and overcome by the conductor and others who assisted.  The other was at the time attacked by passengers on the said bus whereby he was then stomped out by a passenger on the bus as well.  This was the one with what he claimed to be a grenade.  We have since then called in the B.D.F and officers from Benque Viejo and San Ignacio Police formations and we have combed and searched the area for the grenade and for him as well.  We have so far come up with none of the two.”

Marion Ali

“Do you know who you’re looking for?”

Inspector Dinsdale Thompson

“Yes, we have witnesses who have come in and said we have seen him before, so we definitely have a face that we are looking for – no names at this time but we definitely have a face that we are looking for.”

Marion Ali

“What about the one that died?”

Inspector Dinsdale Thompson

‘The one that died, he is a Guatemalan national, a guy Dominguez, that’s what we have so far.”

I have to applaud the people on the bus for handling that situation the way they did.
It will not be the last time that those Guatemalans will enter Belize to commit murders and crimes against the Belizeans, it is about time that they are dealt with extreme force or results.

  2. fountain says:

I agree with your comment maddy V… it seems that Guatemalans can come to Belize from all corners and commit crime. Further more they kill Belizeans in Melchor like if people are dogs, it time for Belizeans to start to treat them that they way they deserve.

  3. BELIZEAN PRIDE says:

my praises, applaud to this brave heros proud belizeans who risk their lives to save theirs also. pity they didn’t kill the next one but should be a lesson to all criminals lingering around to think twice. one important thing heroes is to always figure if the risk is possible cause these s.o.b don’t think twice to kill also. thank you so much and hopefully these examples will let criminals know that we are tired of being on our knees before them.

oh police or compol should check the melchor hospital for any young man with injuries like brocken leg or hand for our investigation too. hope they do.

  4. Elgin Martinez says:

Big up my Belizean people for doing what they had to do to defend themselves from those criminals on the Bus.

  5. Elgin Martinez says:

No one on the Bus had a Camera Phone to take the picture of these criminals?

  6. juice says:

  8. macal rivera says:

Shatta, what is this for bull….t?
    Quoting you:
“the only f….. Up thing is that they only attacked the criminals cause they looked like spanish ppl… they took it as an easy victory. Do u think if it was creole ppl trying to rob the bus anyone wold try to defend”.
two men got on bus with the intention to rob and perhaps blow up the bus, or shoot someone and all you can think of is the race situation here, c’mon crime sees no color, and if it was a white man, yellow man, Spanish or black man they should get the same treatment
Like that the Guatemalans got, there should be no exception to the rules when it comes to crimes.

  10. M Cruz says:

In Guatemala when they catch people trying steel – the communitiy NORMALLY ties the person(s) and burn them…….. Maybe we need to follow their example

  11. Islander says:

I definitely join to applaud our fellow Belizeans on defending themselves…The support for this local heroes is overwhelming and that is a great thing, though it makes me wonder…..

Is the support for them overwhelming only cause the criminals are Guatemalans? I believe that the support for self defending citizens should be overwhelming regardless of the nationality of the criminal…

Many times you see businessmen and other citizens defending themselves from our own local criminals but then you go online and you see people criticizing them and claiming how good church going the criminal was and bla bla bla…

ALL I AM SAYING IS LETS SUPPORT PEOPLE WHO DEFEND THEMSELVES AGAINST CRIMINALS REGARDLESS OF THE CRIMINALS NATIONALITY CAUSE A CRIMINAL IS A CRIMINAL IS A CRIMINAL…

  12. Tyadia says:

All of you sound like a bunch of racist bigots. I’m ashamed of you.

  13. Tyadia says:

Thank you for that islander; I find the attack against “Aliens” very disturbing.

  14. Better Belize says:

Crime changes people directly and indirectly….I had never felt joy for a murder but when criminals are murdered, it gives me some form of joy….I know its not a moral but criminals are making Belizeans cold hearted with no pity for criminals…BELIZEANS SHOULD TAKE SOME FORM OF WEAPON FOR PROTECTION, LUCKILY SOMEONE HAD A BLADE TO STAB THIS CRIMINAL….Belizeans, please when confronting a criminal, please be sure that you have the probability to win and not risk your life it others will not jump to attack the attacker…WE NEED LICENSE FOR MORE BELIZEANS TO BE ABLE TO OWN A GUN….

  15. Benqueño says:

    Kudos to my RAZA.
I bet you they will think twice when planning an attack in the Cayo West Area.

Belize City ppl should learn from the Wild Wild West and start taking action in their own hands.

  16. rita says:

Mein Belize get real. these are Born Guatemalans and Grown belizeans. Hello you think someone would attack a destination they dont know. these are people that are living long here in Belize but are born in the neighbouring country. the sad story that no one pays no mind is the girl that jumped off the bus. it is the saddest part. Belize need to stop packing up more criminals and get an execution for these criminals. murders should be executed. crime is raising up and im glad for the people that acted upon these criminals.

  17. Islander says:

Better Belize….What are you talking about? Nobody murdered that criminal, it was a justifiable homicide not a murder…. furthermore you can defend yourself from criminals without feeling morally odd for doing so…

Please read your bible, you will see that in all those killings that happen in the Old Testament there are clear differences between murders and justifiable homicides.

  18. zorro says:

yow big up to to the man weh send off that bruce lee kik he is the real mackoy and further more the people on the bus should have use dat same .22 and full up that guate with all the bullets well save one in case his bwai mi come bac lol. but real talk bout time cause our country crime rate is ridiculous and dem clown ya ah come cross wit fi dem fu*** fi mek we look worst so again dey got wat dey deserve

  19. BT says:

when a chinese shop keeper shoots a black robber people bawl, but when a “spanish” or “guat” gets killed in the commission of a crime they want to hand out medals.

  20. Elgin Martinez says:

Tyadia:Too bad if you find the attack on aliens disturbing.Apparently you are one of them.So what the F do you expect us to say? These people had intentions of taking my Belizean brothers and sisters lives and i applaud those Citizens for their bravery. And if you’ve got a problem with what they did then maybe you shouldn’t be living in Belize if that is where you’re at.?You sound like a Guatemalan Taliban.

  21. BELIZEAN PRIDE says:

that’s true what you say BT and it shouldn’t be like that criminal your a criminal either black or spanish. the chines people are the must vulnerable to crime if we see it due to their culture of not being to aggresive like we spanish or the black community. and we should be fair either spanis or black you should be killed when necessary.

  22. CM says:

It’s a real shame for all this racist comments and even worse, how can you applaud this types of actions. These actions just make a more violent society and that is why we have the authorities. Remember that we still have honest and brave policemen out there. It’s not your fault; responsibility falls on the “government” for not being able to accomplish their responsibility… Don’t risk your lives or endanger other people’s lives either!!

  23. Mindfull says:

I do agree with not pining crime to color but please dont let chinese fool you for you havent lived in China as yet.

  24. enough is enough says:

Good point BT. crime is a crime…no matter who does it.

  25. maddy vandijk says:

Tyadia,it is too easy to play the race card, so sometimes we abuse that power. Wake up, it’s about crime and not race.
Crime is crime, and the Belizeans are fed up of it. As if though the crimes committed in Belize by Belizeans are not enough the Guatemalans must have their share in the destruction of the Belizean lives as well.
This was not the first time the Guatemalans entered that country and caused blood-shed among the Belizeans, and it won’t be the last time either.
So call us all racist if that make you feel better, your outburst of racist in this situation is ironically hilarious that I had trouble suspending my disbelief.
I am 100% Anti-crimes, and I don’t give a darn who commit a crime against innocent people of Belize, those Guatemalans got exactly what they deserved, too bad one got away.
Let that be a message to all potential criminals, Belizean and Guatemalans some of us will not go Quietly in the night.

  26. melvin ivan says:

AUTHORITIES ?AND THE GOVERNMENT, THEY ARE ASLEEP ,IF WE ARE GOING TO WAIT UNTIL THE “AUTHORITIES COME WE WOULD ALL BE DEAD BY THEN !…….

  27. Tyadia says:

Elgin Martinez and Maddy: your thinking is a clear example of the SICK mentality among Belizeans. People like you keep us from moving forward.

  28. American says:

I am an American and I feel the same way about you Belizean aliens living in my country. Practice what you preach. If you can’t stand the Guatemalans in your country committing crimes and taking advantage of your country, then stay in Belize, keep the Guatemalans out, and stay out of my country. What makes you think you can come to the wonderful USA and do what the Guatemalans are doing to you?

  29. Devil's Advocate says:

Seeing that a lot of the people who comment on these forums are Belizeans living in the United States, and considering the migration patterns of Belizeans to the USA, it wouldn’t surprise me if some of the people raging here about the aliens and Guatemalans are Belizeans living in the USA probably illegally…most of them living in the south side of Chicago and southside of Los Angeles where nobody else wants to live.

But, they feel like since they are of no importance in those places, they sit in front of their computers in their sad cookie-cutter homes/apartments or at their menial workplaces and comment on these forums thinking that just maybe their ignorant comments might be of some importance to the people of Belize.

  30. Star says:

Belizeans! Please don’t try to make everything about race or color. We were not brought up that way. by saying things like that u only put ideas into the head of people and children. everywhere i believe a level of discrimination happens, but don’t fuel the racial fire. I am mestizo, born in OW and raise in Bmp, had to travel as a child frequently to Dangriga, I was a victim of racial discrimination by a few Garifuna people on the bus . on several trips I was removed from my seat on a bus by a Garifuna women (Z-line) and had to stand up the whole way, was about 12 yrs then. But you know what, i blamed that now on ignorance, i’ve thought my kids to respect every race or color or religion. i could have remained bitter about it but didn’t, could have made my kids racist but didn’t. think it’s time we stop all racial prejudice. blame it on ignorance if u have to.

leave racism out of your heads

  31. Kailey says:

lets wipe out these ….. guatemalans and send them back to their country. this has nothing to do with racism. They come to our country and threaten us and we cannot do anything cause they go after the rest of our family. Yes, they are humans like us but they don’t think that way. They are born to be criminals….. period

  32. maddyvandijk says:

    Tyadia
Once again you have failed to see that your country have longed been stagnant, not moving forward, and no real evidence of change. The Belizeans are killing Belizeans and the Guatemalans are killing Belizeans, enough already.
Many people on this forum are screaming to end the gun war in that country, and while many Belizeans are still dying by gun violence you are screaming racism because the criminals were Guatemalans, shame on you.
The rest of Belize is not holding malice against those that risked their lives to rid the world of one more thug operating beyond the law. You need to stop being such a narcissist and admit that The Guatemalans’ can be just as dangerous and prone to gun violence as other races.
Tyadia, I assumed that only the ignorant and disrespectful people are out there on the streets carrying guns, stealing and murdering people. Here on this forum I would like to believe that we are all adults and can agree to disagree without name callings or disrespecting each other the way the way you did in your comment.
This kind of behavior is not acceptable, and it is a matter of choice.

  33. macal rivera says:

Maddy, don’t get to upset over tyadia comments OK, just the name make me realize she is from another planet!! No Belizean blood, or else she would know what those guates have been doing to us, trying to take our land, trees, men , women children and now our lives. Oh no we caanot tolerate those ALIENS anymore,………………….. I would never put a foot there, NEVA..
