There was a double murder on Faber’s Road in the murder capital, Belize City, last night.  One of the victims is the son of Dangriga Magistrate Clive Lino, and the other is the brother of Ryan ‘Fatback’ Young, who was killed a few feet away from where the two men were gunned down after nine thirty on Tuesday. According to the police, twenty-three year old Kevin Lino was shot at point blank range to the left eye and twenty-six year old Kevin Casanova was shot to his head and chest.   Lino’s family members declined to comment as they claim the target of the crime was Cassanova.  News Five spoke to the Cassanova family which is tired of all the bloodshed.

Jose Sanchez, Reporting

Kevin Cassanova and Kevin Lino were shot and killed outside number fifty-eight Faber’s road last night.  The two Kevin’s left the house in a friend’s car to get food. The family believes that the gunman was waiting for Cassanova under the house of their neighbor. The pool of blood shows where Kevin Lino was killed as he exited the passenger side of the car. The glass that he had in his hand shattered where he fell.  Cassanova, who was in the back seat, was shot twice, when he exited the back seat, and Lino was shot in the head when he ran up the stairs to his family’s home.

Rita Mae Cabral, aunt of Kevin Cassanova

“As I hear it I know da he get shot mein. When he got shot apparently he was mid eh pan di stairs wid di food. Ih got shot by di back ah di head yah and inna di chest and he run and dat dah weh pah ih drop right dah room door. Whole ah deh so dah mi lone blood cause when I come out I si di next young man pan di street and I mi think dah he but I neva know dah two somebody get shot.”

Cassanova was visiting his family during his four days off from MRD security in Placencia where he was employed as a guard.  Lino was a friend who was in the wrong place.

Tyree Flores, Sister of Kevin Cassanova

“My bredda tek two shot; one in his head behind his head back and one at di middle of his chest and his friend, coworker, he get three shot; two in his head and one somewhere part of his body. That young man, I wouldn’t even seh he gang bang or whatever, he just came here because of my brother. They worked together as I say and they are friends since my brother went down there at Placencia to work. So I say that they killed that one innocently.”

Rita Mae Cabral

“He mi have his ways and thing and we try talk to ah and thing and ih get wah job and ih have two kids and ih tek care ah dehn. Ih just come Monday.”

Jose Sanchez

“Where was he?”

Rita Mae Cabral

“In Placencia – security job. Ih just come Monday. He come once a month fi look fi ih kids and spend wah lee couple days wid dehn and den ih go back. Ih just come Monday morning and from ih come ih noh gone nowhere. Just last night ih gone out gone buy food fi dehn eat and I mi deh home when I hear di gunshot. As I hear di gunshot I tell ih sista, I seh dat dah Kevin get shot. I just think dat, I mi feel it. I tell she call but den she mi can’t call ah and ih ruff mein, ih rough.”

It is rough For Rita Mae Cabral, Kevin’s aunt, because two years ago Cassanova’s younger brother Ryan ‘Fatback Young, was killed less than ten feet away from where he was shot.

Rita Mae Cabral

“Disa dah di second time ih happen to dis family inna less dan two years.”

Jose Sanchez

“Who have you lost before?”

Rita Mae Cabral

“Ih younger bredda, his younger bredda. Di sixth of April 2008, next door dehn mi di play cards and dehn shoot him too.”

In April of 2008, Kimberly Cassanova spoke of the pain of losing one of her two brothers.

Kimberly Cassanova, Sister of Murder Victim (April 7, 2008)
“I just want deh find di person who kill my bredda cause I feel it fi my ma. I di try be strong fi my ma but I can’t be strong because dehn tek weh wah love from me. I only have two bredda and they tek weh the loving one from me because he noh mess wid nobody. He only have one friend and dah boy deh so do construction work. When he come from work my bredda go da ih house everyday right ova deh so go watch basketball. He mess wid no, no, absolutely no, nobody. So I just want mek yoh know, please, I di ask yoh why you kill my bredda?”

The graffiti on neighborhood fences say RIP Fatback.  Now that both Lindo and Cassanova are gone, another sister tearfully speaks of losing both brothers.

Tyree Flores

“ I lose my brother before, yesterday mek two years and one week exact my first brother died. Like what my aunt said, this is hurt, my mom right now she can’t even talk to you guys because she can’t take this. What do those guys out there want to do to my mother? I am not saying my brother is an innocent person. He do things out there, people say he do things. I don’t see, people out there say. I am not saying that he didn’t do people nothing out there or whatever. But to shoot him in his head, that’s not fair. If want to kill him, shoot him in his body part or whatever. But his head? Dat show yoh dehn mean fi kill my brother, they wanted my brother dead. For what reason? What my brother did to them? I don’t have a clue.”

Jose Sanchez

“Do you think Kevin was targeted? Did he have any enemies?”

Rita Mae Cabralgrafitti

“I think he had a couple enemies out there. He was no angel. I noh wah get pan TV and seh oh ih no do dis and neva do dat. But ih neva kill nobody or rob nobody. He was mischievous. And dat’s about what we know about ah.”

Cabral has lived on Faber’s Road for over forty years. The once peaceful area has transformed into one of the city’s hotspots for violent crime.

Rita Mae Cabral

“Hmm, changed a lot. I neva believe dat back yah would ah mi be like dis. Back yah used to be peaceful, quiet, we neva have to fear fi go dah shop and walk pan di street or hag out pan di street side and talk to friends and things weh we used to do couple years ago now we can’t do it cause we fraid. We fraid fi even go through di door. So ih really rough fi we right now because we noh even get over the first one.”

Tyree Flores

“Crime no deh down. I would say ih really deh high cause every day dah like five people dead almost fi di day. Yoh noh talk bout night yet. I mean fi seh you have to stay inna yoh house, you dah wah prisoner inna your own house. You can’t even go nowhere. Nowhere you can’t go cause if you go anywhere yoh have to look ova yoh shoulda although you noh do noboy nothing. I mean fi seh too much thing happen, too many thing, too many thing. I mean fi seh dis need to stop.”

Cassanova never knew his father who migrated to the U.S. before he was born. Kevin leaves behind two children, four year old Kevaun and two year old Kelvin, who will also grow without their father and an uncle. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

  2. maddyvandijk says:

Another duo died by gunshots, family mourned their deaths, and asking questions why. More kids fatherless.

In the end will there be any more Belizean men alive in Belize who will be Minister President?

The mother said it, one of the men was no saint, and trouble followed him home.

  3. concernedbelizean says:

the youths dont realize that when do do these killings they are taking away the wrong from the victim and allowing it to fall on them… we are not here to turn rock stong.. each and eveyrone of us will die and we each will be judge SEPERATELY… taking a life those not make u powerful it allows u to have more sins to answer to when your day comes to face our creator.. sit for a minute yougn ppl .. THINK ,,, THINK VERY HARD AND LONG IF ITS WORTH

  4. Educated Belizean says:

this is totally outrageous, to think that Belize is quickly becoming the leading Caribbean country in regards to the crime level with such a small population. what is even more saddening is that it will not stop anytime soon, because it goes deeper that police not doing there jobs. it is a issue that is very pervasive throughout all facets of the society. i think, the leaders of the country have severely forgotten about the people and have not been doin there jobs effectively.

  5. Elgin Martinez says:

Apparently the DPP acts like she is immune from the violence in Belize it’s just a matter of time and these criminals will knock at your door.

  6. Swag says:

This is so sad , one of those brothers was my friend.I didn’t know of him to be mixxed up in stuff like that until i got the real news and found out that he was simply in the wrong place and the wrong time.Murder is a norm in Belize ,it seems if someone don’t get kiiled it wasn’t a good day.I hate to see my country like that , it is the time for the lord to come back…

  7. evan says:

I am Belizean living in the United States. I have spoken to other Belizeans like myself , and everyone is
wondering whats taking the government so long to impliment the hanging punishment?. If this is not
caried out, the killing is going to continue. So all that is needed ,is one example.

  8. belizean to d bone says:

its sad to c the street of belize transform its from a once peace place (our parents speak to us about) into a war zone (plauged by gun shots and any countless other social ills). wat concerns me mostly is the fact that innocent ppl are becomig caught up in the web of street and gang violence. the politicians are at a standstill as the crime rate escalades; failin to find a solution to the problem…A country with such a small population need not go thru the issues that Belize face… while human rights activist c the death penalty as an inhumane treatment which strangles the fundamental rights and freedom of ppl and the constituion…it fails to address the imprsionment that the general public face…isnt that in of itself reducing our own fredom and rights…(freedom to move about without fear of a stray bullet) Look man just lets hang those that we kno are indeed criminal…(the ones we catch red handed)….

  9. Star says:

Evan, speak to your Belizean Friends and tell them hanging is NOT the answer. Statistically it does not reduce crime.

Belize has stone-age investigating techniques. We need to be more effective in convicting these individuals. Right now only 5 people are serving life sentences – for murder!

  10. Overly Concerned says:

I agree with Star. Belize relies too much on eye witness and our country is too small for that. There will be no convictions because eye witnesses will be eliminated. We need to rely heavily on forensics. That is the only way we can get convictions.

I also agree with Evan too. After we can secure convictions hanging is the next step.

  11. My Brothers Keeper says:

Without Strong, good fathers the youths are getting bad example. We don’t need the death penalty, we need positive role model men. A Goverment with a plan to prepare our youths to be the next leaders of our Country, and not the destroyer of hope for a better Belize.
Are we growing our kids in Church.

  12. melvin ivan says:

hHMMMMM !THE POLICE DEP’T SCARES ME ,it would be good to hang all them murderers, and give striker penalties to robbers, rapists, NO BAIL,but its sad with so much corrupt police officers they will do anything for money,we can’t trust the POLICE DEP’T ANYMORE….suppose they kill the wrong person ?

what next? this is frightening what is our prime minister thinking,is he eating or sleeping ,the WORLD IS TALKING ABOUT THIS LITTLE CARRIBEAN COUNTRY,NOT WITH HALF THE POPULATION OR QUARTER OF JAMAICA,THIS S… PAINS MY STOMACH ,DEAN BARROW ARE U WAITING FOR A MINISTER TO BE EXECUTED.

  17. BELIZEAN PRIDE says:

it’s really getting scarey to walk in belize city now. you never know when a bullet might hit by mistake with this criminals shooting like crazy on the streets like it is their playground of war practice. God please help barrow open his mind and vision to see our people killing each other everyday for simple reasons like pride, envy and some only for the sake of shooting. Make this barrow feel the stress every belizean faces with this hard time living we are facing while he pockets the thousand and enjoy happy life like faroah.

  18. enough is enough says:

Really sad to see these youths drop…and their kids grow without their dad. Its like a viscious cycle. Time for the government to step up.

  19. Frank Rhys jr 3 says:

You people need to watch (Maple Street) There is no way these crimes are just random. Think!
what makes one man kill another in such cold blood? The Almighty did not create man with
such type of mind frame. Start searching your bloodline and fine out who are your Ancestor.
(The easiest way to destroy a Nation is to have the people fight amongst themselves). If you
think it’s bad now, keep put your trust in these False Leaders and continue sacrificing. these
young boys to these (Dracons). A voice from the past Already done told us to Come
out of her,and yet you people keep acting like those who killed and murdered your Ancestors
have any good intentions towards their Childrens. Dont follow them cause things are about to
hit the fan. This Earth will Recycle it’s self and, all these parasites going to get thrown off.

i’m a belizean living in calif. and i love my country so much, but it hurts me to see my people killing each other. i wanted to come to belize for vacation but for sure i ain’t. i have a better chance being out here that going there. i just wish people would wake up and see the devastation their causing the country

  21. BA says:

Belize needs to start dispensing some jungle justice, we need a neighborhood to just converge on all those wanna gunmen and just chop them to death. That is how they do it in the country side in Jamaica, however in kingston city, the people are passive just like in Belize city that is why people do what they want in Kingston city and Belize city

  22. Elgin Maretinez says:

It seems that been a Hitman is a form of real estate in Belize.

  23. Elgin Maretinez says:

Why is it surprising to us that Dean Barrow have not step up to the plate to stop these crimes. You all forgot that this man didn’t even got married in Belize. He is already 3.5 million ritch and with the escalating crime rate in Belize his Ex Wife’s Law firm is going to make money. This man is just waiting for his time to be up to move to the state. He cares less about our country.

  24. rog ramirez says:

so so sad about what happen to those two young man. nobody deserve to die so violently like that. And for what! am sure it’s nothing worth taking their lives . I just hope the person or persons who commited the murder is found and bring them to justice or bring justice to them.

  25. Me says:

Kinda reminds me of duck hunt !!! LOL

  26. Belizean Boy says:

Hang the murderers hang in the air. That is the last solution to get back a peaceful environment. We cannot even walk the streets without fear. It has gone too far. Mr. Minister of Defence, are you awake? Are you aware of the crime in this country especially in the city or are you sleeping?

  27. Zee says:

I think that the government should start to do some hanging in this country it’s getting out of hand and if we as a country don’t start take action it will only lead to more death and fear for our Belizean people young and old.

  28. roses says:

    Amen to True Belizer

  29. mrsjohnsonIV says:

Wow! this is just breaking my heart, the government really need take some action, they need to get the military involved, and request some assistance from England, we need some assistance from our Queen and the British Military to implement some foreign – I am in agreement to bring back hanging or public flogging — we need to reclaim our SWEET BELIZE – Lord please help my country

  30. Dangriga says:

belize! belize! wow here’s the thing right…….the only reason why the counrty is like this is because they know (the criminals) can get away with it…..the government dont care….even the police officer…..like how it was mention in the report…..Kevin lino body was on the street like an hour b4 the police arrived…what kind of BS is that??? Belize is losing its beauty bit by bit…..these youths are adopting the american lifestlye….the demon took over belize in a heart beat…..god have a lot of convincing to do for ppl to convert back him….alot of spiritual guidiance to be done on this counrty.

  31. Aries says:

We need to purge out this country, the army of Belize needs to get in their trucks and wipe out the streets, all those youngsters who look suspicious and want to be bad take them out, burn a couple on them alive, we need to go back to the wild west days. That is the only way this country will get better, all those gangster hood get rid of all those people, clean Belize city streets………start killing all those frequent prisoners……we don’t have money to be maintaining criminals, start putting them out.

  32. Aries says:

In an article one time in Honduras to control crime all young men with tattoos would be dragged out of their house and would be killed just for having a tattoo….or those who used other gangster body language and dressed improperly would be killed on the spot. That was the only way crime got controlled in a big country …Minister of defense what are you waiting for to start purging the street.. start the corfue system……Hon. Prime Minister and minister of defense we the people of Belize plea to you…do something…an do it quick…..start purging the country all indecent dress code and vagabond ism put an end to it ….kill all those no good youths if you have to

  33. Sin says:

The clown who did this will get his… RIP kev! Mourn you til I join u…

  34. Elgin Martinez says:

RIP: To my Cousin Kevin Lino.

  35. Al says:

Some people think that hanging will not stop the killing. The cowards who hide behind their guns, when it comes time for them to give up their life, they will squeal like a pig. They think they are smarter than the police, an in many instances they are. Belize need to get stiffer punishment for teh witnesses who fail to stand up, then the governmnet should take the case and prosecute.

  36. NIKKY LINO says:

MEIN THIS IS TOO SAD AND ITS EVEN WORST CAUSE SOMEBODY KNOW SOMETHING BUT NO WAH SAY NOTHING CAUSE DAH NOH THEM FAMILY YET. TOO MUCH GOING ON TOO MANY PEOPLE GETTING AWAYAND TOO MANY PEOPLE LOOSING THERE LIFE SENCELESSLY MEIN SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE AND FAST
