Will students of St. Peter Claver be free of asbestos?
On Tuesday we reported on the health and educational predicament that the teachers and students at Saint Peter Claver Primary in Punta Gorda are facing because the deteriorating roof is shedding asbestos. A serious health concern has erupted for many of the students who have complained about itching of the skin as well as labored breathing. While Marion Nolberto, the principal, and the teachers are adamant that the Catholic management and the government either provide safer educational facilities by Monday, that option has still not been confirmed. But today, one institution has donated cash for the renovation of one of the three afflicted roofs. Social Security Board’s Punta Gorda branch manager, Arnaldo Villas, handed over a cheque worth over eight thousand dollars to the school today. Saint Peter Claver Primary is still hoping that the Ministry of Education will provide two temporary buildings for classes. Those buildings need to be ready before the first bell rings on Monday morning. The teachers have threatened to close the school down if suitable accommodations are not found.

i don’t mind you guys ( s.s. board ) using the belizean people money for a worthy cause, it’s very good. but hope the minister should have done his contribution first to be an example.
Catholic Church – SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!
It is heinous, criminal, deplorable, reprehensible, incomprehensible to expose, compromise and threaten the health and welfare of children, teachers and in fact the whole community.
Asbestos is lethal and the situation should have been dealt with months ago.
Allegedly the Catholic Church is building a posh new two story, sea view building in PG. Supposedly to house visiting guests. Unbelievable!!!!
I have seen the new expensive concrete building that the church is supposedly constructing for their visitors. All this while parties argue about who will pay to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for the children.
Asbestos is a proven poison, and kills!
How Christian is that?
I agree that this is a serious issue. The Toledo East house of representative member, the department of education and the department of health all have responsibility to resolve this issue of exposure to the children, teachers and people of St Peter Claver school and the town of PG. They should all work along with the Catholic church to assure that the children are moved to a safe location and that they are not exposed to asbestos.
What is wrong with these people?. Common sense dictates that Asbestos is detrimental to peoples health. The Catholic Mission and their Building Contractor need to be sued big time. Now that this problem is exposed, our Government Representatives need to close those buildings down and file charges against the Catholic Mission to correct this mess before it’s too late.
