Belizean bodybuilders return from Central American Games
Bodybuilding has been a source of gold in the past, but there were no medals forthcoming this year. What the delegation brought back was experience and certification for a judge in the sport. In addition to the president and vice president of the association, Belize was represented at the games by Faith Ferguson in Body Figure, Mike Tsai in Medium Weight and by Rigoberto Vellos in Heavy Weight. It was the first time for Vellos at an international competition and he is hopeful about the future of the sport.
Rigo Vellos, Represented Belize in Bodybuilding
“The experience was very great. What we can improve, we can improve in putting more time in the workout. We learned some new stuff and the experience was very fine. It is my first time. And hopefully next time I have the experience to put in what I learn and gain something over there next time for Belize.”
Jose Sanchez
“Do you think there need to be more support from the National Sports Council or from the Ministry of Sports not just with bodybuilding but with all the sports when there is competition on the international level?”
Rigo Vellos
“Yes, I believe we need more support from the ministry and whoever else can give us support it will help us a lot outside, international. We do need more support from them.”
Alfred McKenzie, Bz. Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation
“This t time around the participants from the other Central American countries had been preparing for a longer time than us. Along with the sentiments and the judging and I’m not saying that that’s the problem, but I think they were better prepared than us this time around. It reminded me of when we had it in 2007 we were better prepared than them. Last year the games were postponed because of economic problems. All in all I am satisfied because what we brought back is a second qualified female judge in bodybuilding in Miss Wendy Simmons. All in all I am satisfied and I would like to at this point thank all the sponsors who gave us donations to come to the games.
McKenzie says that anyone interested in learning how to judge a bodybuilding competition, there will be a judging seminar in Belize in June, to be conducted by one of their international affiliates.
For the bodybuilding foundation, suggestion: I think you should pick up those kids from the street and put them in a bodybuilding program and keep them off the streets. maybe this will lower the crimes in belize…
