The past weekend was not without its share of violent crime and two more names were added to the growing list of murder victims.  This time the incidents happened in the northern districts.  Marion Ali took a trip north to get the details.

Marion Ali, Reporting

The first homicide occurred shortly after six on Saturday evening in San Joaquin Village, Corozal, and claimed the life of twenty-one year old Edgar Monteagudo, a Guatemalan who had been living and working as a cane farmer for the past two years.  But Monteagudo was not the only victim as his friend nineteen year old Jesus Gonzales was also attacked.  It was a crime police allege was committed by the men’s sixteen year old neighbour.

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

“Both men were inside San Joaquin Village when they were approached by a sixteen year old neighbour who the deceased had a longstanding misunderstanding with and this minor confronted them and an argument ensued and then a struggle turned into a fight where the minor inflicted stab wounds to both men.  Monteagudo was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.  This minor has since been charged.”

Jesus Gonzales, stabbing victim

“He don’t like the bwai because he come from Guatemala.”

Marion Ali

“He said that?”

Jesus Gonzales

“Yeah.”

Marion Ali

“But he stabbed you as well and you’re a Belizean.”

Jesus Gonzales

“Yeah because I hang out with him.  That’s why he don’t like him.  Lotta times he seh when he was drunk he told him that he don’t like he.”

Marion Ali

“He told him this in front of you?”

Jesus Gonzales

“Yeah, like three times he told him like that.”

Marion Ali

“Did he ever threaten you before, or the other guy?”

Jesus Gonzales

“Only one time back there with a machete because he was drunk.  I don’t hang out with him.  I only hang out with that guy who died.  I don’t drink. The other guy don’t drink and dehn drink and smoke.  We are apart from dem.  We noh like to hang out with them.”

Gonzales was stabbed in the left shoulder but his injury was not life threatening.  Meanwhile, according to the family of Monteagudo, he had only left home to collect his salary that evening and that was when he passed by his friend’s house where he was fatally stabbed.

Rosa Gomez, Aunt of Edgar Monteagudo (translated)

“He arrived home like five thirty.  He was working at Santa Rosa with Mr Alberto Witz.  He came home, took a bath and he got ready to collect his pay.  After five thirty or minutes to six I received a call that he had been stabbed and after a while I got desperate and I was worried and then I received another call stating that he had already died.”

Amini Banos tried to help Monteagudo.

“When I came out of my house the only thing I saw was the assailant getting up from the ground.  Then I saw Noe’s aunt saying she needs the police so she gave me the phone, I dialled 911, gave it back to her.  She spoke with the police.  I run to aid Noe and what I saw when I reached, I saw Noe facing down.  I tried to talk to him.  I told him Noe I’m here, talk to me something but he didn’t say nothing.  But I could notice that he was still breathing.”

The sixteen year old has been remanded to the Wagner’s Correctional Facility until May twentieth.  Marion Ali for News Five.

why they don’t show or say the name of the criminal he is already up to do crimes they should show who he is as well so we know who they are as well

  2. maddyvandijk says:

Ok, I know that the Belizeans do have some problems with the Guatemalans entering Belize illegally, committing crimes and murders and stealing our land. But even I do not condone this race crime.

The killer is a young and angry child, hope this case will be treated just like all other murder case.

  3. BELIZEAN PRIDE says:

charge him fully for being that stupid. if you don’t like the person keep a distance but if you harass them then your in trouble. jail for good make he regret his stupidity.

  4. macal rivera says:

if this 16 years old bway dah man enough to kill then I want to see his face, Get a picture and publish it. I hope he gets what he deserve! Yes I am very much against aliens coming into our country, but he did’nt have to kill the man, No no. this is wrong

  5. tania says:

i kno this child! he is a very mentally ill child due to drug abuse! his parents know this because its not the first time he has gotten into trouble but this time he has gone too far his parents knew of the ways of this kid and still didnt do anything to get help for him, they just let him be the way he is and now he will suffer some rather difficult consequences. if his parents would have found help for him a long time ago this wouldnt have happened!!!!!! i blame the parents not the child!

  6. belichico says:

you cannot judge all guatemalans because of one. but i think this young man should pay for what he did.and concerning the guatemalans most of this people are hard working. and theres no reason why one should have anything against them. FOR MACAL RIVERA.?WHY DO YOU SOMETHING AGAINST THIS PEOPLE?

  7. Roska says:

I agree partly with Tania.. that guy is definitely a problem “child”; disrespectful, agressive, undisciplined, racist and a drug abuser. That’s the type of children cable TV is breeding in our villages now, with MTV and other channels that promote and glamourize drug abuse and aggresive behaviour. I mean society on a whole. Just imagine, our government has appointed the foul mouthed brat Shyne, as musical ambassador of Belize – what does he promote in his lyrics?? Of course the protective, undisciplined and reckless parents are partly to blame! But this 16 year old “child” also has to be held responsible for his actions… he is also to blame and needs to learn that his actions have consequences, sometimes as terrible as his actions!! That’s what growing up is all about… and Macal… anytime I would prefer a calm, hardworking Guatemalan in my village than a lazy, pot smoking, agressive murderer like this “child”!!

  8. Elgin Martinez says:

He is not mentaly ill.He is a sprang head. And if you sprang you wrong which means that you need to get hang for taking people’s life.I care less if he is a minor. From the time he made up his mind to take someone’s life then he should be exposed.Stop protecting these idiots.Tiered of the Bull.

  9. Evelyn says:

Macal Rivera, I hope you are never in another country as I think you will be treated the same. How can you say “yes I have a problem with aliens coming into our country” you know how many belizeans are “aliens” on other countries? Would you like for your people to be stampered at for no reason! I just hate discrimination in all levels, it’s ignorance and stupidity!!
