Gwendolyn Young sentenced to five years for Burglary

Forty-six year old Gwendolyn Young, a resident of Conch Shell Bay in Belize City, has been sentenced to five years in jail after being convicted of Burglary.  Young was accused of entering the home of eighty-three year old Edel Maheia and stealing a purse containing five hundred dollars, a bunch of keys and a toaster oven on October twenty-seventh of last year.  In court on Monday Maheia, who is physically handicapped, testified that she was sitting on her sofa when Young entered her home selling mangos.  Maheia reportedly asked her to leave but she refused.  Instead, Young proceeded to search the residence where she found a purse containing the money. Before leaving Young allegedly grabbed a broom and hit the elderly woman repeatedly.

During trial three witnesses testified against Young including PC Jermaine Mangar who responded to the burglary report.  Magistrate Albert Hoare told her that due to her previous convictions for similar offences he could not impose a non-custodial sentence.  Court records show that Young has eight previous convictions including a burglary dating back to January 1997; a theft in 2008 where she was fined two hundred and fifty dollars, but did not pay. Additional time will be added to her sentence in default of payment.
