Another convict escapes from prison

Edger RobertsAnother inmate flew the coop on Monday night shortly after seven o’clock.  Edgar Roberts, a resident of Independence Village, who is not considered to be armed and dangerous broke free from cell number forty-three in the Medium Security Section of the Hattieville Prison by smashing a lock and exiting the building unnoticed.  Roberts is described as five feet nine inches in height and weighs one hundred and thirty pounds.  On April twelfth prison officials reported that five inmates managed to escape from Tango Ten of the facility after overpowering a corrections officer who was on duty.  They included Terry Bainton, Dennis Quilter, Jose Luis Cocom, Juan Melendez and Jose Malgar.  Of those five Cocom was the first to be recaptured followed by Bainton and Melendez.  Dennis Quilter who has a reward for his arrest remains on the lam from authorities while Jose Melgar is believed to have headed west into Guatemala.  Anyone knowing the whereabouts of the three men is asked to call the nearest police station or the Belize Central Prison with information regarding their sightings or identification.

Let’s give a hand of applause to the police department. I recommend that we just close down the prison.

Time for government to find their balls and take the prison back under their control. Privatisation didn’t work, most jailed are out in a few years, having served less than half of their sentence!

They have observation towers – stick 2 machinre guns in each and have them manned 24/7. Anyone outside the cells, or the perimeter after lights out – shoot them! (They will be easy to spot, being dressed in Orange) – Simple. You’d only need to do that once!

Escapees should be returned to Belize if they get to other countries, and 10 years, with NO Parole added to their sentence on their return. (5 years to any caught in Belize, and 15 years if they commit a crime whislt on the run).

Instead of handing prisoners the latest fashions in contraband clothing – Do what the US does – make them wear Orange Coveralls with the pockets stiched up, and sandals. Won’t get far dressed like that, and hiding weapons would be a lot harder!

Hard labour should be mandatory too, if they don’t want to work, they don’t eat or receive any privileges (Including visits). The hard labour could include improving the prison for other inmates (High security), gardening and agriculture to grow and raise the food for the prison, and maybe sell outside to raise funds for the prison facilities, and for juveniles and low security – road building, maintenance, clearing drains, litter etc. all under strict & armed supervision, wearing either bright orange or yellow coverals.

Those in Low Security, and due to be released should receive skills training and education. Even supervised on-the job training, as part of their resettlement and introduction to the outside world (Could start 6 month before release date).

As for Minors, there should be a Juvenile Detention Centre. Inside, but separate from the Hattieville Ramada, and be run along the lines of Boot Camp. Strict discipline, and being drilled, educated and given skills training from dawn to dusk. They should be working on a merit system – the more they tow the line, learn and improve, the better their living conditions – break the rules and you go back to square one, lose all privileges, and start all over!

Jail should be a deterrant for criminals, not a school of crime!

I am in total agreement with Rizzo I think it is indeed time for Government to find the balls to cancel that damn contract and take over control of the prison. I am angry as hell for I am a tax payer and when I heard that Government had budgeted 7.5 million dollars of tax payers money I really hit the roof in these hard time budget are being cut in all Government Departments including the police department and the Ministry of Social Services who I consider to be damn hard workers and yet 7.5 million goes to a private entity to manage a public institution. Where is the out cry Belize?

THATZ RITE,ITS RILTZCARLTON HOTEL FOR THE PRISONERS,GOV’T NEED TO CUT THE PRISON’S BUDGET AND INVEST THAT $7.5 MILLION DOLLARS TO PROVIDE THE PEOPLE WITH MORE EMPLOYMENT,AND STOP VICTIMISING THE BELIZEAN PEOPLE……WE ARE TIRED OF THE WAY MR DEAN BARROW IS LEADING OUR COUNTRY! WHY NOT CUT MS.LOIS YOUNG BARROW’S SALARY ALSO? OR CUT ALL THE MINISTERS’ SALARY TO 1/4.OR START USING THE $8 MILLION PROFIT FROM BTL AND INVEST IT IN SOME KEY AREAS,MAYBE IN EDUCATION SO HE NO HAVE TO GO TO THE USA AND BEG FOR MONEY,HE SAYS IT WILL BE FOR EDUCATION,HMMMM THAT REALLY BAD BECAUSE IF HE’S BEGGING OTHER COUNTRIES ,THEN WHY HE HAS TO RAISE THE TAXES{KILLA VAT } IT DOESN’T MAKE SENCE TO RAISE TAXES NO IF OTHER COUNTRIES ARE GOING TO HELP! SO WHAT WILL HE’S GOING TO DO WITH ALL THAT MONEY IN THE 2010\2011 BUDGET NEARLY $900 MILLION DOLLARS IN JUST 1 YEAR,WE CAN IMAGINE THAT THINGS WILL NOT GO DOWN VERY SOON,AS HE PROMISED TO LOWER THE COST OF LIVING NO MATTER WHAT” SO WE CAN ONLY “imagine the possibilities”.
