Ideas to combat violent crimes come out of CitCo’s summit
Everyone agrees that something needs to be done about crime and urgently so. This morning, Belize City Mayor, Zenaida Moya Flowers, convened a summit in search of ways to stop the violence in the streets. Notables such as Attorney Michael Young, Senator Godwin Hulse and the outspoken Yolanda Schakron, took turns on the microphone. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports.

The City Council’s Violence Prevention Summit had a wide cross section of participants with varying ideas on how to approach the crime situation. But they all agree that it’s everybody’s problem and we should all chip in to find a solution.
Michael Young, Chairman, Crimes Control Council

“We cannot have like various organizations coming up with different solutions without connecting with each other and finding out what has already been planned, what recommendations have already been formulated for particular areas and appreciating that it has to be an effort where various persons, committee, organizations will communicate and will move together on one road forward.”
Yolanda Schakron, Belizeans for Justice
“We need to tackle crime in a realistic way. We cannot sit back and say this is a south side problem. Crime affects everyone. I never thought I would be here standing talking about Chris in the past tense.”

And it is with that mentality that the organizations and individuals sat together to dig into the causes of the violence, problems with the law enforcement system and the possible way forward.
Yolanda Schakron
“Whenever a police officer is involved in a crime, he should not be transferred or taken on leave or put on interdiction, he should face the justice system just as any other person in this country has to face it.”
Godwin Hulse, Senator
“My presentation was focused on the process and that the process must be all inclusive, it cannot be little pot shots all over the place and it cannot be disconnected. We have to have common ground, we have to have buy in and we have to have doables and if we have that then we can move forward in the solution to crime.”
If the committees formed during the summit hold strong to their commitments, Senator Godwin Hulse says it could lead to notable change since the situation has reached a point where everyone has had enough.

“There is a sense that this not something to play around with. When you see people get up there and their eye water running because their loved one died and so, this si no joke. This is not politics, this is not upmanship, this is not pushing up your chest; this is pain and people feel this and there comes a time when people are saying you know no more, we can’t deal with this.”
Zenaida Moya Flowers, Belize City
“I believe that the outcome will be one whereby we will see the people agreeing upon what they can do and what they are willing to work towards. You will see a firm commitment because it’s an understanding. Everybody saw here today that it’s not only their organization that is here, it’s at least I would say two hundred plus organizations.”
Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers says the committees will be made public and will work on a deadline, reporting frequently on their progress. Delahnie Bain for News Five.
A total of ten committees were formed to work in areas including social reform, police and legal review, religious support and education.

absolutley nothing can be done about crime unless you bring in the death penalty, these criminals know that they will only be convicted if identified by a witness and that’s hardly going to happen. pop the necks !!!!!!!! that’s the only solution. these summits or meetings are only to show that there is an attempt so that people cant say they only sitting on their A$$es doing nothing. we need to be like china that regulate how many kids a mother can have, in our case if you are not in a financial position to have kids you cant . these kids begging on the street are more likely going to be criminals. dont be gripped with fear take them out. this is why crimes seldom happens on the north side because they know they are more likely to be SHOT!!!!!
Enough meetings and summits!!! Count how many meetings and seminars are held every year? A lot of them!!! Why not do a monthly raid by the Police and BDF on the areas that are known to be crime infested. Spend the money you waste with meetings and summits on well coordinated raids and you will produce results. Dont let the criminals rest, keep them running and running…
Basic Law for Belize:
If you Killed – You will be killed by a pastor or a priest with a shot gun.
If you Thief – Your hand will be chopped off by the Minister
If you commit sodomy/rape etc. – You b….s should be chained, tied to a tree and your hands to a pully of which it will be pulled by a truck.
Other crimes – you should pay for it.
No Jail for anyone. It is just too good for the bad!
For a better Belize:
Abolish all the human, civl rights whatever.
Don’t listen to the UN report that they do in office.
Basic.
And when your best friend is wrongfully convicted for murder or theft, you’ll be bawling and begging for authority to stop their barbaric actions.
So much for your basic law.
did jeffries said anything about his cops doing criminal acts and not being punished like any civilian? the summit should have focus on the law it self first. ” i’ll clean my yard first and then i’ll help you” should have been jeffries words. the police dep. should be first to abide by the law.
There is a serious problem coming out of this summit …garbage boy phillouby is proposing that we are guilty until proven innocent like Mexico….the fool doesn’t seem to realize that it isn’t working in Mexico “the region’s most violent country” how does he expect it to work here?
If phillouby wants me to take him seriously he better learn how to dispose of garbage first and then ill lend him an ear…
Mando, if you want to live in a society like that, best you go to Saudi Arabia.
Right now in belize everyone is playing reverse russian roulette. The gun is never pointed at the holder. I think we need to bring about some very simple rules to the game. For any crime you get 10 fold the time of what you would normally get and 10 fold the fine and 10 fold the bail charge. All crimes should be accompanied by all three of those things. (very long jail time, a fine and a heafy bail amount that has to be paid even if not found guilty.) While these criminals are in jail they should be forced to learn a trade and use it to produce a sufficent income to payoff their debt they have aquired and cost of living in jail; this way belizeans can get a tax break and the government can take back control of the jail and make alittle profit as well. Hell that money could be used to build a new school or fix the roads. Just think what more jail time, a high bail and a bigger fine along with forced labour to produce income could do for our nation. This is our country its time we take it back from these hoodlums.
BTW the government is only corupt because we let them be.
