Four Belizeans possibly murdered in Mexico

Aricia & Kurt Mariano

Aricia & Kirk Mariano

There is tragic report tonight that four Belizeans were murdered in Mexico today. They were on their way back from the USA and were reportedly victims of a robbery.  Information is still trickling into our newsroom but so far we know that Kirk Mariano, his wife, Aricia, and Scenes of Crimes Police Constable, Martin Rodriguez may have perished.  There are reports that a fourth person might have also been killed but this remains unconfirmed.  The incident happened in the state of Tamaulipas between Puerto la Marina and San Fernando, an area prone to violent crimes by drug cartels in Mexico.  The Belizeans were reportedly traveling in a convoy of vehicles when they were attacked by robbers along an expressway.  It’s a story that has three families desperately searching for answers into what may have happened.  We have been unable to reach authorities on the Mexican side because it is a public and bank holiday in honor of Cinco de Mayo. News Five spoke with Marva Mariano, sister Kirk Mariano, one of the purported victims.

“My brother came and my other brother Harrison came and told my mom that some dealers that came in told them that—told him that they received message that my brother, first it was that he crashed.  His wife and also one of my cousins that were traveling with him crashed and died so they called me and we came right away.  We called Foreign Affairs, we called my cousin at the border, Charles Flores, and we called, I don’t remember the name of the Rotillo or Rosillo.  We have been calling all these places to get information and our cousin from the border, Charles Flores, just told us that he heard about an incident of some Belizean being shot and killed.  So we asked him if he can please find out the name of those individuals and at one point he said that they called my brother’s name.  But after calling several other borders and the press officers in Mexico area they have no confirmation about any traffic accident or any shooting incidents that have happened. We have been calling some other dealers that we know that are on the road traveling.  My brother John he came in today and we are all calling and trying to get some sort of information or feedback on exactly what’s going on because we are not sure if he is injured or not because just about what, ten minutes ago I got a call from my same brother and he said he spoke to some guy that saw him two hours ago. So we’re hoping that that is so and we’re, I’ve sent him text because I know whenever he hits the border the first thing he would do is to call my mom.  So I’m hoping that he would give us a call and let us know.  If there are other dealers out there that have seen him today we are asking if they can give us a call and let us know.  My number is 622-0038.”

The Mariano family says their brother has been driving through Mexico for over ten years bringing vehicles into Belize for sale on the local market.  The last communication they have had with him was at the international border near the state of Texas on Monday when they were preparing to cross over into Mexico.

  4. Maddyvandijk says:

    Sad if it’s true.
Why would a person risk his life and his wife life knowing that the route they choose to travel is a danger zone an area prone to violent crimes by drug cartels, if you have to travel from point A to point B with a convoy you are not safe at all, you are a risk factor.

No one has the right to end a person’s life no matter what the consequences’ might be, even in this situation. This can count as a loss since this man was only doing an honest job; unfortunately these people were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Mexico has a big problem right now with the drug cartels; people are getting killed life flies, but if they only kill themselves that’s ok with me too.

This is crazy. My brother travel through mexico and now I am worried about any Belizeans life who travel through mexico. This will create alot of problems because for some reason I do not think our Government will do anything about it. They worry about trashing each other and take care of what really matters. This is really sad.

  16. E.Genus says:

Honestly the road from the texas/mexico border to about Tampico is very dangerous. Myself along with my brother in law and 5 guatemalan was on the road during the easter holiday and got jacked by 3 fully armed men in a tinted suv, and attempt was made on the road to divide the convoy but was fruitless. Ee are bless to be alive. These robbers do not respect convoy or areas or choice, they will rob jack kill u anywhere cause the people wont say anything there in mexico cause they know the consequence.
There is an organized and active network (mob/mafia or whatever u want to call them) in mexico, before u leave the border the messeage is sent.
I advise my fellow Belizean to avoid the mexico journey as u might just not reach ur destination. I am happy that I can be here to tell the tale today.

May I suggest that families contact the Mexican Embassy at Belize to inquire about it. Also , the nearest Belizean Consulate to the place where the incidents happened, and with the Belizean Embassy in Mexico City. I am sure they can contact with the specific authorities, in order to know the facts and the procedures that should be followed.

  28. arkw says:

Thank god these people are safe.
This is very serious nobody should travel thru mexico especially with late model four door or 4X4 vehicles these are the type vehicles that are targeted most , but doesn’t really matter what type vehilce you drive its not worth risking your life , lots people get killed daily just check out the news daily and you will see.
