News Five broke the news last Friday night that Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Development Juan Coy, was in a traffic accident in the area of Indian Creek Village. Accompanying Coy, was his wife Brigida and his brother-in-law, Venancio Salam who was driving the government vehicle. The maroon Nissan Navarro pickup reportedly suffered a blow out which caused the vehicle to overturn. While Coy and his driver were airlifted to the K.H.M.H. by a BATSUB helicopter later that night, his wife Brigida died several minutes after she was removed from the scene. News Five spoke with Police Press Officer, Fitzroy Yearwood who gave further details of what transpired.
Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
“Police responded to a road traffic accident a little after six Friday the seventh of May in Indian Creek Village Toledo District. They are saying that when they arrived on the scene they saw the Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Development, Juan Coy, suffering from injuries to his nose and they also observed his wife Mrs. Brigida Coy also suffering various injuries. The vehicle at the time was being driven by one Venancio Salam, a police officer. Initial investigations reveal that Salam was driving on a portion of the road that had some loose gravel and he suffered a blowout to, I think it’s on the driver’s side front wheel if I’m not mistaken. This caused the vehicle to overturn and eventually ended up on the side of the road.
Apparently this vehicle was travelling towards Golden Stream at the time. Minister Coy and Salam were transported to the K.H.M.H. but Mrs. Coy succumbed to her injuries a few minutes later. Our investigations continue into this matter.”
Juan Coy and Venancio Salam were treated and released from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on Saturday. A post mortem examination on the body of Brigida Coy was conducted at the Punta Gorda Hospital this afternoon. Funeral arrangements have been made for Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock in San Pedro, Columbia.

Government vehicles are not to be carried home and used for personal use. They should be parked at government offices. But Belizean politicians don’t care and abuse their power.
They make so much money from their posts plus all the corruption, so they can afford vehicles that citizens of the country only dream of owning.
PUP & UDP are all alike. Just out for themselves.
your right dave no mistake about it. we’ve seen it everyday even for their past time. i’ve seen gov. vehicle with the driver in a drinking state and later they mess up the vehicle, it costs all the belizeans which should never be allowed.

Face it… all our HARD EARNED TAX PAYERS DOLLARS will replace his vehicle sorry to say it can’t replace his wife. What a tragedy for her family to have to bury her at such a young age.
KARMA is real people.
Its a shame cause now this woman has lost her life due to the negligence of the driver. Its a fact that Juan Coy likes to be in his vehicle drunk most of the times and nothing is being done about it at all. why do top level government officials like to make these ministers get away with these things.
The man just lost his wife. For Christ sake.
