Nayely Torres of Orange Walk wants to be Miss Latina

The Miss Latina Pageant Organization in Corozal has announced it is sending a delegate to compete in the twenty-ninth Miss Latina America del Mundo 2010 Pageant. This is the third time a Belizean is participating and the organization has high hopes for eighteen year old Nayely Torres of Orange Walk. Torres was chosen out of six prospective delegates because she is the full package, boasting beauty and brains. In fact, as star student herself, Torres’ platform for the pageant is education because she believes too many kids are out of school and she wants to promote higher education.  Torres is also excited to showcase the culture of Belize when she heads to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. “The pageant basically explores the different cultures we have to offer especially in the Latin American countries. When it comes to us exposing the Belizean country, it gives us more of a networking system with the different countries and we can be exposed to different cultures. And yes, Belize can say that we have friends in other countries; not only in one, but many others.”

“And going there to represent this country, what are you hoping to achieve?”

“What I’m hoping to achieve is just the experience and what I can learn and grow from it because like we all know, learning doesn’t stop here but it continues every day. And what I can learn from it is to show people how much I can learn from it and how much it will enhance me and learn from it every day.”

“What qualities, as a participant, do you bring to the competition?”

“The qualities I bring is to be honest, be friendly and just be respectful and with this it shows what type of delegate I am to show that I am very experienced, exposed to the different things I have to offer because it’s not only about beauty but it’s also about intelligence.”

“And are you confident going in?”

Nayely Torres

“I’m learning every day so the more I learn, it makes me feel more confident and comfortable because I’m being trained by Ms. Felicita Arzu, by Mr. Gabriel Garcia and some other people that have been helping me every day and I thank them so much for helping because I know I want to do such a great job and I know I can so hopefully this time we can bring a crown to Belize.”

“And what do you think of being chosen to represent this country?”

Nayely Torres

“I’m excited but a bit nervous because I know it’s my first time in a pageant, I’m only eighteen years old and I can learn so much from it.”

Torres leaves for Punta Cana on May twenty-third and will return to Belize on June sixth. Last year’s delegate, Liliana Nunez, did not win the crown but she did top the costume section of the competition.
