Son kills eighty year old father over a shilling

The second murder claimed the life of an elderly citizen just after midday on Saturday. But the actual incident took place the day before, at around two on Friday afternoon, when a man severely beat his father into a coma from which he never recovered. Sadly, the motive for the beating was for a shilling which the son wanted. The violent incident was witnessed by a minor who was at home with her grandfather. Here again is Marion Ali.

Eighty year old Clifton Grant was sitting in this couch at his home at number five Oleander Street around two last Friday afternoon when his son, twenty five year old Glenford Grant allegedly started to beat him. The elderly man’s daughter, Shelly Sanchez, was not at home, but her twelve year old daughter was, and ran to a nearby neighbour to get help. Sanchez told us today what she found out upon going home.

“My brother beat up my father and the neighbour called the ambulance and the police and when the police came he was lying on the ground partly unconscious and that is it.”

“No, no he’s not always violent but like he slightly – I noh know if ih nerves di bother ah or dah day deh ih mussi mi just get frustrated, I noh know.”
The report is that the younger Grant wanted a shilling to purchase a cigarette and got upset when his father did not have the money. The incident has left Shelly Sanchez coping with two losses of her household, which has suddenly shifted from four members to now only her daughter and herself.

While police have detained Glenford Grant they are yet to charge him with his father’s murder. Marion Ali for News Five.
Glenford Grant will be arraigned on Tuesday for the murder of his father.
what is wrong with this animal. Killing some one is wrong, but killing some one for 25 cents is just unhuman. To make it wose its your father who you have killed for 25 cents.What is wrong with Belize man. I wonder what he wanted shilling for. Probably to try and have enough money to buy a dollar weed or a five dollar piece of crack. This is a shame.

this is really nsane, Jez, the cruelty of violence is really rising and these things to me starts from the lack of good parenting, family divided causes these things.

I am ashamedat the comments that i see here, utterly mortified! You people have the audacity to call this young man a lunatic without any consideration of his circumstances. Maddyvandijk, you are indeed right, “no one in their right frame of mind just beat up someone just over a darn shilling”. Glenford is not in his right frame of mind. He was once a decent and normal person like everyone else who went to a decent and normal high school and had decent and normal ambitions. Notice how his sister has compassion on him, because she knows that that “lunatic” was not the brother she grew up with. We make these judgments without any context like prejudice bigots without any substance for our preferences. If Glen had had access to appropriate diagnosis and treatment facilities he would be dealing with his mental illness inside of roaming the streets acting his dad. We need to look at the issues in context and make constructive recommendations for ways forward rather than condemning people to hell. “Imagine what he would do to a non relative” says macal rivera, well news flash, I personally know a lot of non-relatives that he has never harmed. I am in no way condoning his actions, but rather using it to illustrate that crime in Belize is being driven by many factors and we must tear away the surface coatings to get at the substance if we are going to eliminate the problem at its root cause. Think about that and pray that you dont ever suffer any sort of mild dementia or mental illness in Belize, else you will likely find urself in a similar situation. many people in Belize goes undetected and untreated. what do we say when we see a person acting out of the norm- ” OH E CRAZY’- what do we do about it nothing as we dont have the facilities to give them treatment, Iam not condoning this gentleman action but for all we know he might be bipolar or mentally incapable. Condolence to the family who has to deal with this awful tradegy.
To realityoverfantasy thanks for pointing out how naive Belizeans are regarding mental illness, that is something that we need to get out of the closet and deal with, this have been happening for years. Everyone think it is something to be ashamed of when it is occurring in their family so they pretend it is not happening and eventually it ends up hurting other members of the family. There is so much that needs to be fixed in this country if we would only get some action enough of just running our mouths and burying our heads in the sand. So sorry for the family.

I love Belize but i believe it is time people start to pay for their crime ,especially beating your own father ,an eye for an eye ,you kill someone well someone hang your … ,God thats your father get a job respect your parents especailly your elders. For heaven sake start hanging these …….
An eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth, if we live by those rules at the end of the day we will all be blind and toothless, and what would we have accomplished then?
I agree punishment should fit the crime but they are exceptions to every rule.
“A lunatic” someone mentioned and maybe he is because no one in they’re right mind would do that, then again who knows. If he really is insane then he should be placed in a facility where he can get the help he needs and that crime is not repeated. Can you imagine if he would have attacked the little girl in his condition.

Whom diagnosed this animal as being mentally ill. Since when being sprang on drugs make you mentally ill. I read each an every one’s message posted and all of you have great points to your message. It is too late for this guy. We do admit that Belize needs a great deal of help. We Belizeans growing up we never knew what mental problem meant. In Belize there are a lot of single parents – But there are also a lot of great parents who’s child just want to be bad…. I have personally seen close friends of mine – who is strick with their children, go to every parent conference at school, drop them and pick them up from school, takes them to church and so on….. They go out their way for their children to have a great education and a life of honesty. Let me tell you that when my friend got a call from the school that they caught her son with drugs in school – and when she went to school she found out that he was ditching classes. When she drop him at school he would wait til she drive off then run out the gates. He is in front of the school when his mother reach there to pick him up.. My point to this story is that we can’t always blame the parents for the wrong doing of their child. Children will find a way to do what they want to do without the parent knowing.
My heart goes out to the family. God will take care of it…..
