Student protest by staying away from Santa Familia RC School

Most of the classrooms at the Santa Familia Roman Catholic Primary School were empty today as students stayed away from classes following a demonstration by parents on Tuesday.  According to village council chairman, Millard Tun, only twenty of the three hundred and five students enrolled have shown up for classes.  That’s ninety-four percent of students who are not in classes. This comes in the wake of the principal’s suspension from active duty as administrator of the school.  Antonia Flowers, who has held the position since 1996, was temporarily removed pending the outcome of an investigation carried out by the Ministry of Education.  Flowers has been accused by residents of the village of allegedly misappropriating school funds, selling off school property to her family and charging students exorbitant registration fees, among other claims.

The village council chairman further stated that Luis Carballo, Education Officer for the Cayo District, informed him that a replacement would have been sent to the school as soon as possible.  It turns out that the acting principal, Rudolfo Tun, was instead chosen from the existing staff at Santa Familia RC.  Parents are not happy with the choice and they sent that message by keeping their children at home.  The chairman says residents are of the opinion that the acting principal is generally in support of the suspended principal. A letter issued today by the newly formed parents committee highlights a list of demands.  They include a police order prohibiting Mrs. Flowers from entering the school and that the representatives of the committee be given sole access to the cafeteria and equipment for them to assist in fundraising.

Are these people getting crazy? Do they want to have their own way! I think enough is enough. The principal is out of the scene and they also want him removed. We live in a democracy and let the law takes it’s course. There is no room for rogue elements at this time. The children are suffering. If many of them are myopic then the village council chairman should enlighten them and not be using them for pawns and to gain political mileage. Is the police powerless to do something? Coome on we are paying teachers to work so parents the only harm you are doing is to your children. resolve your issues peacefully.

Its sad, how parents and non parents of Santa Familia R.C School are acting, especially the chairman (Millard tun) in the end children are the ones directly affected, they are missing out from school (classes). The chairman should be the last person to be alleging against the Principal of the school, maybe he forgot that she was the one seeking help for him when he was in hospital dying. Instead of him giving thanks to God he is still alive it seems he want more trouble. by the way he is a pastor, has his own church. really don’t know what message he is trying to give his followers.

The money or any physical item which is the sole reason for suspensions, investigations, court orders and anger has nothing to do with the education of the children. In a situation like this one, the leaders could have solved the problem among themselves and not take away important learning and developmental process from the kids. This situation my friends will leave its mark and a few years from now it will return as young men and women who cant find common ground, since chaos, violence and disagreement was learned in elementary school.

This clearly shows how narrow-minded these Santa Familia parents are, i have heard about the inappropriate deeds this woman has done i am glad that the ministry of Education finally did something about it..
I am grateful that younger, more open-minded individuals are starting to replace these illiterate ‘old fashion’ people.. *but then again.. it might not be there fault.. i am sure that they are being brainwashed.. what elects politicians? “the lack of information”…
