SOL Belize wants company with oil concession to stop using its name

joe habet

Earlier we heard the Prime Minister say that he wouldn’t stand in the way of oil exploration. Well, there is one company, which has been granted a concession to drill for oil which is proving difficult to identify.  And that’s Sol Oil Belize.  A check for its particulars at the company’s registry came up with only one company with that name. This company emerged after a name change from Shell Belize Limited. Shell is a partner of UNESCO and has agreed not to conduct business or support any commercial activity within World Heritage Sites.  But since another company using the Sol is being thrown around, Joe Habet, the General Manager for Sol Belize Limited tells News Five that his company has not received any concession for oil. In fact, Habet says they have been trying to find out who is using the name Sol, so they can ask them to stop using it.

Jose Sanchez

“The department of Geology and Petroleum has a map that says Sol Oil Belize Limited. This is Sol; is this the same Sol that is on that map?”

Joe Habet, General Manager, Sol Belize Limited

“Our name is Sol Belize Limited. I saw the article that was run in the news last week. I was out of the country but I checked it online and the name of that article is Sol Oil Belize Limited. It immediately caught my attention but it’s not the first time I saw an article with that company name. Actually, in October or sometime last year I remember one of the media houses running an article with a Sol Oil Belize Limited proposing to do offshore drilling. I immediately contacted our directors to see if they had anything to do with that company. They said no. I actually at that moment got a correspondence to our attorney to investigate who are the principals behind that company. Their response to me was that they did not find anything in the local registry so it must be an international company.  So again when I saw that article I contacted them again and asked “Can we do something about that? Because the name is very, very close. We are Sol Belize Limited, not Sol Oil Belize Limited.”

Jose Sanchez

“And the name itself, the company’s registry would not have allowed a different entity to share such a close and similar sounding name?”

Joe Habet

“They should not and I don’t think they did because like I said our attorney did do a research and confirmed that the company is not registered locally. There is no fault of the local registry, it’s just not registered locally as far as we understand to this point. We are asking them to try and investigate who the principals are and at least ask them to not use that name while doing business in Belize.”

Anyone who can assist in identifying the principals of the oil company is asked to contact Habet at Sol Belize Limited.

I like the name FEARFUL OF BELIZE, HOW CAN THE PM NOT STAND IN THE WAY OF OIL EXPLORATION when it will involve the ENVIRONMENT/ECONOMY OF BELIZE, he is so RIDICULOUS. What I say to Belize “NO DRILLING’, especially in the waters like what happened in mexico. dont you get, even Guatemala is already giving their 2 cents.

fearful of Belize, im sorry, but you can you ask a company to change it’s name after someone attempted to steal its reputation. Your comment is comparable to asking Nike to change its name because someone came recently with the name Nikee. and that link you gave, i clicked on it. there is nothign there about oil. and if you read the article you would realize that Sol Belize Limited is not Sol Oil Belize Limited. You missed the point dumbo!
