Cabinet reshuffle: Ministry of National Security split into two

Doug Singh

When he made the announcement, the Prime Minister said that the changes would tackle some of the pertinent issues facing the country, particularly in crime and violence. The removal of Minister Carlos Perdomo as head of the police was long in coming. He however, retains responsibility for defense. The PM announced that he has drafted Senator Doug Singh as the new minister of the police. Singh is also the Chairman of the U.D.P. and according to the PM, he has thriving offshore businesses.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The Ministry of National Security—what was the Ministry of National Security will now be split into two.  It has struck me and in speaking with Minister Perdomo, he confirmed that that ministry, with all the portfolio subjects that come under it, is too large.  It’s very difficult for any one person to handle so we will now have as was the case in years past, a separate Ministry of Defense and then we will have a dedicated Police and Public Security Ministry.  That Police and Public Security Ministry will be headed by a minister who has no constituency to look after in terms of a political constituency; who has tremendous experience in the private sector; who is able to speak the language of the stakeholders we’ve been consulting; who in fact formed part of the group that drafted the outlines of the plan that ultimately benefited so much from the consultations and what people had to say during those consultations. The new Minister of the Police and Public Security will be Senator, the Honorable Douglas Singh.  The new minister is perfectly aware of the magnitude of the task that he faces. I am convinced that he has the wherewithal both in terms of ability and in terms of dedication to give us the drive that we need to make this thing work.  The honorable Carlos Perdomo will be the new Minister of Defense.”

The PM also announced that George Lovell from NEMO will move as CEO to the Ministry of the Police. Both Singh and Pitts were not at the press conference this afternoon.

If Perdomo wasn’t doing any good at his last post, why would he do any better in this new post? Now all we have to do now is to sit and wait for Doug Singh and the other guy to do a good job, don’t hold your breath though.

The PM and the UDPs are a bunch of jokers…..

  3. madaras says:

Same “crop” different diappers. Or like the old saying same circus different “CLOWNS”. We need a new party altogether, BELIZE. People that work hard their whole lives, not the ones brought up with a gold spoon. Its time for the real poor people to get a break. The government can’t even feed some of the homeless, helpless, individuals; its a dame shame.

Trust me, everyone is trying to make that money, help their immediate family, buy houses in the U.S, pay off people to make more money.

I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS GOING TO HELP.I THINK EVEN THE COMMISSIONER SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHANGED BECAUSE IT IS HIS RESPONSIBILITY MORE THAN THE MINISTER TO MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER.

  5. blvnjah says:

it is standard with both parties to elevate non elected persons to the post of ministers. what does this say of the udp, who have so many ELECTED OFFICIALS,

  6. BLVNJAH says:

IT IS STANDARD PRACTICE BY BOTH PARTIES TO ELEVATE NON ELECTED PERSONS TO THE POST OF MINISTERS. WHAT DOES THIS SAY OF THE UDP, WHO HAVE SO MANY IN THE HOUSE, THAT THEY CANT FIND OR TRUST ANYONE, THAT WAS ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE, TO SERVE IN THE POST THEY GAVE SINGH.

  7. Fearful of Belize says:

Give the policemen guns let them shoot first then talk later. No matter what you do there will be some renegade cops. it”s happening every where except China, North korea, probably Cuba. these are totalitarian countries. Otherwise if there is no law and order these scum bags will continue to kill innocent people taking the law into their own hands. Belize depend on tourism to help the economy . once these tourist start to feel unsafe in the country they will not want to travel there they will find some other place that is more safe. Example Jamaica. Then again Hang the scum bags. a life for a life. there’s not enough work in belize to cllect taxes to pay for jail hotel

  8. CayoBuay says:

About time they allowed someone else to take part in helping Mr Perdomo. He is unfit to carry out his duties as minister of National Security, in reality he should be removed from his post. As per Belize laws a minister that is unfit to fulfill his duties shall be removed from his post by the Governor General, I don’t recall the exact section but if you do some reading you will find it there.

    ~Quote~

“A member can be removed from office by the Governor-General only after being so advised by the Belize Advisory Council and for reasons of inability to carry out his duties or for misbehavior which must first have been referred to the Belize Advisory Council for inquiry and report to the Governor-General with their advice.”

I am taking a poll as to whether or not Corporal Punishment should be re-instated. Let your voices be heard…

We just talk and talk and talk!!!!! Belize in not a communist country, everyone sits and talk about what Government not doing, and now its time for a new government when the last one was a bunch of criminals.
Get behind the people you all chose and build!!! such a small population where everyone almost knows each other. As a people if we dont learn to work with each other then we will never get anywhere… killing the youths will not solve the problems. People wanna come to Belize and build but the one problem that stuck out in one’s mind is CRIME, try to fix that first and the rest will follow.
