Steven Buckley, the Belize City man who was brutally shot back in April will finally have his day in court. His near fatal shooting made headlines amidst public outcry over what is widely believed to be a case of police brutality. On the night of Wednesday April twenty-eighth Buckley, along with three other companions, was inside a Dodge Ram pickup belonging to his employer when they were pulled over by police on mobile patrol in the Fabers Road area. What should have been a routine stop and search ended with Buckley’s shooting and the Department came under fire for use of excessive force. Today when Inspector Dennis Lopez, accused of pulling the trigger was brought to court, he was whisked through the back to avoid the media. He was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Margaret Gabb McKenzie for Attempted Murder and Dangerous Harm. Forty-two year old Lopez of the Belmopan Police Department was unrepresented in court and was denied bail. Ironically, at the time of the shooting, Lopez was attached to Operation Restore Confidence in Belize City, which was attempting to regain confidence between the community and the police. Lopez’ next date in court will be on August third.

” he was whisked through the back to avoid the media.” see the problem here. why does the police try to avoid the media from snapping a pic from the s.o.b when he’s suppose to be listed as a murderer on most case they are hidden from media. it’s time to make the police stop hiding their fat @$$ so we the people can later be on the look when we walk down the streets.
Its Ok to make necessary arrest when needed–due process should also follow suit to all other cases hanging in limbo or just not prosecuted due to protection from the elements that found themselves on the top.

All you people who are posting comments at the present moment do not know anything about this case but are hurry to judge. Nothing will become of this case as this is not attempt murder and when thing go wrong with you all you go to the police but are ready to throw words when the department do anything wrong. The people of the police department are ready to arrest and charge him but where is the one who kill the other police lately you all still can’t make a arrest why because lopez is black and reyes is spanish you …..are racist.

Wd throw words because the plice force is worthless. Janice, while there are a few exceptions, most people think they are lazy, corrupt, incompetent.. worthless. Nothing will come of this. This idiot Lopez should be put on the street, lose his job, his pension, everything. According to eyewitnesses, he was drinking that night. If Mr. Buckley had died, nothing would have happened.

Why you people hate the Police so much…these are the men and women who put their lives on the line daily for your safety.. they make mistakes…we all do…there are some that are not good but majority work hard because they want us to be safe and their families as well…so why hate appreciate…let justice take its course…if this officer did it purposely then eventually he will be dealt with by God…but knowing this officer here believe me i do not think he did it purposely…i believe he must have gotten frighten and reacted…anyone would react for fear of their life…..I SUPPORT THE POLICE 100%.
Shooting someone in the head by accident is a very poor result of untrained and unprofessional cops. The police should know by now that the most dangerous people in Belize are idiots armed with guns, weather in the force or on the streets.
My prediction of this case will be an Open and Shut Case , and one angry audience.

All of uno …… sometimes people make mistake this is hard but its a mistake and no one no perfect. Some descent police ae out here and this is one they are just tierd of all the killing and things happening so I guest that man was in the wrong place wrong time if they would have caught the right one that was in the act did him that you would have had a lot to say so here what no body could please uno if not even god can do it no one can cause when it rain it pour. Just reading some of these comments I could see why violence is up in Belize. I wonder if some of these people think before they act , or write. I hear a lot of emotions and no brain on the issues of crime in Belize.It seems like all the smart Belizeans are not in Belize and we leave behind a brain drain country.
this clearly shows that the police men will do as they please and still getaway. he should be sent to jail so they can teach him a good lesson. then again he looks like he would eat all the food from the prison. he should be shot back directly in his fat face and see how that feels.
