Shooting victim identifies Dionicio Salazar as the man who killed his friend
There were at least three shootings over the weekend in the City, but the crime wave spilled to the west on Sunday night. More on the shootings later, but in San Ignacio, one man was killed and another was badly injured in an early morning shooting. It is believed the shooting was motivated by revenge for a previous murder in which the gunman was convicted and then released. The gun that took the life of Marlon Rivero was recovered but the man that pulled the trigger is on the run. News’s Five Jose Sanchez headed west to cover the most recent murder in the crime epidemic.
Jose Sanchez, reporting
Twenty-six year old Marlon Rivera and forty-one year old Dean Dougal were gunned down after three a.m. on Sunday morning on Burns Avenue in San Ignacio. Rivera was killed on the spot. Black bows were visible at his home on Carrillo Puerto Avenue and his uncle said he did not have to die.
Voice of: Uncle of murder victim
“I da di uncle in law of the deceased. And words out weh we get pan the street is that my nephew never had no beef with the guy weh do the shooting but it was with the other guy where rumors say that they have an old beef concerning another murder that happened a couple years ago. So he was at the wrong place but at the right time. But to our view, we noh see it that way. We feel like the guy had the intention ah doing the young man something because the amount of shots the young bwai shoot, that is no accidental bullet bredda.”
Keisha Bahador, wife of Dean Dougal
“We just walked out of Fiyah Wata from partying with a friend, we were standing outside. He was across the street and we were beside courts. I was talking to my friend, I saw him and I walked over and I tell him, our next move will be to catch a taxi and to go home because the night was over. So as we were talking there was an incident that was happening in front of us. The police was in front of us.”
But despite the police presence, the gunman was intent on committing murder. According to Inspector Claudio Mai, several persons have been detained for the incident.
Inspector Claudio Mai, Deputy O.C., San Ignacio Police Formation
“Two male persons were seen lying on the street with gunshot wounds to the back. They were identified as Dean Dougal and Marlon Rivera. They were immediately transported to the San Ignacio Hospital where Rivevo was pronounced dead on arrival and Dean was transported to the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan.
Jose Sanchez
“This happened pretty close to the police station. Were you able to detain anyone? Are you looking for any suspects?”
Inspector Claudio Mai
“We have already detained various individuals concerning this matter, but we are still looking for Dionicio Salazar, also known as “Life,” who can assist the police in our investigation.”
Keisha Bahador
“I stepped a little ahead then I heard the gunshots. And I turned around and I saw Dionicio Salazar, he threw a silver gun under a white taxi and he ran up Hudson Street—that’s the street where Blue Angels is. He ran up that street and I just started to scream at the police: I just saw him, he shot Dan, he’s on the ground, pick him up, take him to the hospital, go run after ahn, ketch ahn and they were like…So after I finish screaming and screaming, somebody scratch mi up because they were trying to hold me done, they pick him up and took him to the hospital and Dionicio went on his way.”
The name and face of Dionicio Salazar is well known to Keisha, her husband and her brother- in- law. According to Alberto August, editor of Star Newspaper, the man who allegedly shot his brother, Dean Dougal, was also the man who was convicted of murdering his son eight years ago.
Alberto August, brother of Dean Dougal
“This guy just sneaked up with a machete and almost cut my eldest son in half. He survived eight hours after the incident and died while undergoing treatment at the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan.
Jose Sanchez
“What happened with the case?”
Alberto August
“He was immediately after the incident; he was arrested and charged because he was positively identified by a female who was along with my son at the time of the incident. The defense counsel at the time indicated that he was going to appeal the conviction based on a technicality. He was granted appeal and after six weeks of trial, the jury was dismissed, the judge took case in his hand and dismissed the charge against him and he walked out of court a free man.”
The justice system failed and the family believes the motive for this shooting was revenge for his first imprisonment. At the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan, I showed Dougal a photo of Dionicio Salazar and asked him if he was the man who shot him and also killed his friend. Because of the five bullet wounds, including one to his neck, he wrote the answer. ‘Yes.’ He also showed me a page with the words “Dionicio Salazar is the gun man better known as Life. He kill my friend too, Marlon Rivera.” The doctors indicate that with time Dougal will have a full recovery, and hopefully the justice system won’t fail this time. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.
Nine men are in police custody and it is believed that they have identified Salazar as the triggerman.

I just want to say that Dionicio killed my nephew years ago, and got away with it now as you all can see he tried to kill my brother. I guess this is what the law was waiting for a ticking bomb just went off on their account, for setting that evil man go in the first killing. They set the pig free and he went to make a bigger mess than before, taking another mothers’ child where was justice then, and let see where justice will take this one. This unhumain human being will continue the killing spree until he is dead if the law let him see the light of day again, and again for it seems they don’t know the meaning of murderer; it’s not a game, we talking of once life; only God the almighty should take away not another human being. I love you brother.
Unfortunately, even in the quite and peaceful town like San Ignacio town this type of murder can occur.
Fortunately, for the family the shooter was quickly identified and can be dealt with sooner than later.
The center of San Ignacio is so tiny, it’s the part where the tourists are usually seen, or are staying.
Really good story. Covered all corners. Clearly demonstrates the dangers of pressing charges in Belize. You assist in sending someone to jail and they come out to hurt you.
You have to live in fear for doing the right thing! It is so unfair and depressing how the criminals control us.
MURDER in reverse is REDRUM and its a thirst for some insane individuals! I have seen many cases unfair, Yet we all complain of the system and injustice of the law. Civilians did not make these laws and often we see demonstrations and pleads to have a fair justice. Leaders of the country are the only ones who benefit from the laws cause they protect them. They have a good night sleep, while we sleep with caution…
He is roaming cause he apealed. but we must remember that gossip in streets is different than the reality. it is easy to blame on people. but i have one question were all of you present at the time of shooting? yes we need a good justice system for belize. something that can take inprints of accussed victims. we need to see whether the weapons used really belong to accused persons or others.
every justice system know what they are doing and when someone is convicted that the results at times we have innocent people that get senteced. so if people want justice invest in justice assist in bringing qualified people to do invesigation. gossip is a no no in justice system. so reality not gossip
I don’t understand what you’re saying, Reality Check.
How do leaders of the country benefit from the laws?
This is the second killing in San Ignacio. Maybe now the police will see and stop judging and picking on the Lena boys. This group of boys they have in custody, are constant troublemakers in San Ignacio. The last murder in FireWata of the Santa Elena boy involved some of these same boys and they charged only one boy who was set up by these so called friends. They are always beating up boys causing havoc and just get away due to connections or sports affiliation. I hope this newly transferred Inspector does a good job and not listen to here-say and see that these troublemakers are kept under a keen eye. I’m happy and commend the constant police patrols in Santa Elena and hope that they are doing the same in San Ignacio because everytime there’s trouble with these two sides, Santa Elena boys are always painted black and these same San Ignacio boys always get away and sometimes even stand by the park on court day laughing having their fun day.
Mr. Agust, i feel your frustration and anger but let me tel u this – what you do here you pay here. nobody is self rightoues and above d law of the one above.
IT’S REALLY SAD THAT EVEN HERE IN SAN IGNACIO WE ARE GETTING THE EFFECT OF CRIME. i normally drive through this area but not so early in the morning but it is disturbing to see the audacity that Life has to shoot when many might have been target from stray bullets. I think that we are in a really bad situtation in Belize. Crime rising but no convicts being sentence accordingly or given death penalty to halt this maddness.
It was so sad to hear of my friend Marlon being killed. He was such a cool guy and didn’t deserve to die that way. I believe this was an old beef and I hope that this time justice prevails. This life is a cold hearted killer and shouldn’t be out on the streets at all. My condolences to the Rivera Family and to Dean’s family, keep the faith. I am happy to hear that he is doing better. I have noticed that he has a wife who loves him very much and 3 beautiful kids who need him. I feel so sorry for the parents of LIFE who have loved their children and have done so much for them to have such inconsiderate children, especially him I saw all his poor mom and dad did and fought for him and he never even took the time out to appreciate his old dad and mom. He surely has no heart.
what goes around comes around. i bet all of u are running your mouth but never knew what happen to life couple years ago. what you plant is what u gonna reap. no santa elena man is innocent so stop unu r..s. they lke 2 come over here to cayo and try play bad man ok see what bad man get.. they interfer with life 1st so whatever… lena man hope unu learn
People! The justice system works very well except for a couple items where it can be modernized, (for example admitting a sworn statement as evidence in the trial so a witness does not have to take the stand and be threatened in court and even if they are killed before the trial the killer will not walk free). With that said the real problem is the law enforcement. Cops and not trained well enough. They take offenders to court on charges that they do not have any evidence to suopoport so the guys walk free.
It will soon become a thing of the past for the people of Belize to take law into their own hands because if you are to depend on the judisary system to prevail, you will be dissappointed. These murders in Belize kill at will because they have a proven belive that the justice system will in fact let them walk free to commit the same crime over again. I am heart felt sorry for the lost the Reviera family is experincing now and hope the best for the Dougal family but let’s pray that Salazar is captured and the justice system will restore some bit of dignity in it’s self.
Another youngman slain….RIP Marlon Rivera! my sympathies to his family…Wish you a speedy recovery Dean!
San Ignacio buay I can see your ignorance and see where you fit in in all this. Nothing justifies what LIFE has done. It is boys like you who will make this a never-ending story. I saw life from the first time he came out and saw his reaction towards others. I believe from then he had a gun on him and knew that he was a threat to society. Talking bout bad man, that’s the concept you have all given people to believe but you are no different than the lena boys. How many times you have all chanced single boys walking across by that Tacos stan. 5 – 6 of you on one and you talk about playing bad. Some innocent kids get hammered by you guys. One man can’t play bad around a whole group of you. Their mistake is not running to the police like you all do. Why? Because even if they’re innocent the police believe them to be the bad ones, so why waste time to go to them. They are finally seeing who you all are. I believe in justice and just like how they hammer on the Lena boys I think they should deal with your side also. No word crossing deserves a man to be shot like a dog. LIFE will have to face the strong arms of the law this time and so your back=up leader will be there for you all no more. Let justice prevail, whichever side it is.
san ignacio bway… i want to hear you talking BS when they come for u… what goes around comes around you too…
I spoke to all parties involved. i’m reading this blog now. and i’m surprised. For an outsider, as in living outside of Cayo. I don’t see a difference but a wooden bridge and a Hawkesworth bridge that separates a society. Everyone in Santa Elena and San Ignacio look the same, they live and work on both sides of the river, there is no difference to me, a Belizean, and i’m sure the tourists by far won’t see any difference culturally or racially different about people living on the other side of the river. So i am surprised to find out there is this santa elena san ignacio feud. For people living elsewhere, we only say oh, “dem cayo people got strong calves from walking up hill, an d the gial dem pretty.” that is the worse i can say about cayo people… but this twin town feud in my opinion is silly.
Elementary my dear watsons.
I agree with CEO. Its true our laws NEED TO BE REVISED!!… That one step in admitting a sworn testament in court as evidence would play an integral part in prosecuting the criminals who are plaguing our beloved jewel. I have personally seen how the police and other related anti-crime personnel process a crime scene and it just dissapoints me to see how they make a lot of fatal mistakes in gathering evidence for the prosecution. People!, our anti-crime personnel need to be trained adequately and they really need to improve in their public relations. Six (6) months of police training is just not enough, in my view, to adequately train a police officer. They need to be compensated more for risking thier lives as well. They are really underpaid. Maybe our leaders could look at that as well and just maybe then, if our officers are compensated a little more they would feel less tempted to turn to the other side.
hey mouth runners u live by d gun u die by it. mr.August u know yo son was a criminal and not cause u have money yo chance poor people cause they attack him first years ago. or u 4get what they did to life firs.t sad to hear it ended like this but the world is round. now the same money you were paying for people to kill life you use it to get justice. u think yo money will save you always think again.
by the way they defend life u can tell he have gang protecting him n police fraid i hope dem hang dem m** ra**~!
Jewel?????????????????????????????????????????
Donicio Salazar, had killed with the intent especially with premeditated malice, he did intent to kill or injury someone.
Under this doctrine called the felony murder doctrine, the felonies intent involved by underlying felony may be trasnferred to supply intent to killed necessary to characterize the homicide as murder.
So Donicio Salazar is an adult and the same way he could pull that trigger, he can be hold accountable for his bad action.
life in prison
ninny
wellllll……………… mi lee bouy jun,,,,,,, (nich0)… handle u self wherever you are neib……. no watch no face….. deepest condolensces to the fam of the guy who died…..
We all say this, that, acusing this one and that one BUT, we do not really know the stroy behind the matter. I know all the guys involve. In the first place, with all due respect Mr. August, your son was nothing good either. I used to be out at the night clubs and I can clearly remember how Rodney use to disrespect people. Always very violent and saw how he disrespected Dionicio Salazar. I am not on anybody’s side just have neutral perspective of the incident. And, like they say, ‘every action has a reaction!!! Why don’t you comment when your son and his friends almost killed Mr. Salazar. And for your brother Dean, I can recall him saying that He has $10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) on Salazar’s head.
Have we forgotten whats at stake here? this monster needs to be taken off the streets. its not about the wild wild west justice. its about human lives at risk. Why deviate from the real issue and call the spade a spade? I dont care about petty issues…bottom line is a young man is dead and one seriously injured. I say get your heads out of your …. and realize today for marlon rivera (RIP) tomorrow for your own family. when life strikes again, i want to see how many people will sit here and comment about it! Oh i seriously cant wait for this to happen! a blood thirsty hound is a blood thirsty hound! one taste of blood and he feels as though hes GOD! never has a fall been so anticipated! I rest!
JM

I dont understand how someone can see u commit a crime and testify but there’s still not enough evidence for peace sake u r right in front of the person they saw u and they know u so how comes u still get off murder .
whatever happened to policing in Cayo?
salazar has been caught, thank goodness
i hope they hang dionicio
and charge the woman who hid him.
interesting. its interesting your comment. hanging is not the solution. read your histroy and stop talking naunsense. it is so sad seeing how a man that says he is of success is trying to make these guys kill themselves. why dont we try to make them come together. hello this is so stupid.
I must say they are making a big deal out of Rodneys death when every day we have killing in belize. is it a big deal because his dad has money and he cant do anything with it?
And for Dean he is no innocent we all know how he acts and his girlfriend. and for Rivera RIP with all due respect no man that is good is out on streets so late. plus his girlfriend is known for problematic.
THis is a jewel. I am not ashame of my Belize and if you are F*** off dont bother comments or talk about our jewel.
Hope they reach to an end and Mr. August stop stirring up the pot cause you will be seen as a criminal too!!!!
