Tacos vendor gets one year for inflicting 8 stab wounds

Also in court, a thirty two year old female tacos vendor who was accused of stabbing a woman eight times in front of the Publics Supermarket will be spending one year in jail. Myra Leticia Pineda originally claimed she stabbed a waitress, Claudia Gutierrez, in self defense. Gutierrez was left scarred for life; she is unable to smell since her nose was badly injured in the December seventeenth, 2009 stabbing. Pineda’s trial started earlier last month in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, and ended today before Magistrate Kathleen Lewis when she was found guilty of grievous harm. While she maintained she was innocent, she then claimed that Gutierrez was injured during a struggle for a knife. But Gutierrez was stabbed eight times on her hands, nose, neck and her back. The stabbing is believed to have been prompted by a claim linked to Gutierrez that Pineda’s husband had fathered her child. Before close of trial, the court prosecutor noted that the number of injuries to Gutierrez should have warranted a charge of attempted murder which would have been tried in the Supreme Court before a jury where the penalty on conviction would have been a jail term of eighteen years to life.
