Two men held in San Ignacio murder; Dionicio Salazar still on the lam

marlon rivera

Two men are in custody for the cold-blooded murder of Marlon Rivera that occurred in San Ignacio this past weekend. They are Trevor Lamb and Adrian Arzu, who are facing charges of abetment to commit murder and abetment to commit attempted murder.  The two are believed to have retrieved the weapon used in the murder from under a taxi and concealed it in a garbage can. Dean Dougal, the surviving victim, however, named Dionicio Salazar as the triggerman and there is reason to believe he has fled the country. Salazar was once convicted for the murder of Dougal’s brother, but released on appeal. News Five’s Jose Sanchez has been following this story and has an update.

Jose Sanchez, reporting

Dean Dougal and Marlon Rivera were shot in San Ignacio on Sunday morning. Rivera’s uncle said that the young man barely begun to live his life.

Jose Sanchez

“Your nephew, who was he? What type of person?”

Voice of: Uncle of Murder Victim

“I wouldn’t seh dah wah angel bredda; but at the time weh deh tek away ih life, dah mi wah person weh jus mi di look fu si life as a man. Dah nuh weh person weh look fu no violence. Person weh ina no kind ah problem No kind of problem; because it not even have no problems with the law.”

But police say they have some suspects already…

Voice of: Uncle of Murder Victim

“Well, yes they have somebody in custody; but not the trigger man.”

Jose Sanchez

“That’s Dionicio?”

Voice of: Uncle of Murder Victim

“Yeah, that’s the words that we get from the street.”

According to Alberto August, the brother of the other shooting victim, Dean Dougal has survived two surgeries to remove bullets, and he needs one more surgery.

Alberto August, Brother of Dean Dougal

“My brother was prepared and he was transferred by ambulance to the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan, where he underwent seven hours of surgery. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head, one to the throat, and another one to the left shoulder. The first bullet was removed was the one from his head, that took like one and half hours of surgery. Then they moved to the second surgery was the one in his neck, that took five hours of surgery because it had a ruptured artery in the neck are and that was repaired and removed. But by the time they finished the second operation his body was too stressed to go through the third one. So, the doctor advised me that he was going to give him a few days to see how he reacts to those first two surgeries before he proceeds with removing the third bullet from out of his shoulder. He’s presently recuperating.”

Marlon Rivera passed away, but Dougal has identified Dionicio Salazar as the trigger man. Alberto August, says the justice system is failing because Salazar should have been in jail for the murder of his son, Rodney August.

Alberto August

“In October of 2006, the case came up for trial in Supreme Court and after almost eight weeks of trail on the eighth of December 2006 on my son’s twenty-second birthday; he was convicted of murder and sentenced to murder and life imprisonment. The defense council at that time indicated that he was going to appeal.”

Despite a witness testimony, Salazar won the appeal. And now several individuals have identified Salazar as the man responsible for the shooting and murder; including the surviving victim and his wife.

“He was alone. He had on blue jeans, a grey t-shirt and a red hat.”

Jose Sanchez

“And the doctors are saying that your husband is recovering well?”

Keisha Bahador

“Mhm, it will take time; but he’s going to recover and get over it”

Alberto August

“We are getting the feeling like, the national feeling that the justice system is not working for us. I want to use this occasion to first, express my condolences to the Rivera family at the loss of Marlon, young boy had all his life ahead of him. But, I would also like to use this opportunity to invite to the honorable judge and defense council who were instrumental in getting the release of this convicted murderer. I would like for them to come here and see what the Rivera family is going through; it’s a situation that me and my family went through eight years ago. Almost six years later, two weeks less than six years, probably I would have been going through the same thing again with my little brother. He is strong, I spoke to him and he told me he’s not prepared to die. This family is going through it. If my brother wasn’t strong, I would have been going through it again, eight years later.”

The case only grows stronger as the gun was found in a garbage can on the banks of the Macal River. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

Dougal is still hospitalized at the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan recovering from the gun injuries.

That’s what happens when you try playing gangsters, people will die, this incident is going on for the longest, from when Star son played like he was Crips and Donicio playing Bloods, so no one is innocent here,. Am not defending no one here. Every action has a reaction.
RIP Marlon, we went to school together.

Am I the only one who has lost all faith in our justice system? I am now embarrassed to say i am from Belize. When my classmates and people i come in contact with on a daily basis ask me where I am from, I quickly respond “Sacramento, California!” I used to be proud of my heritage and my culture but now I refuse to announce it. Marlon “SOSA” Rivera did not need to die. Another senseless death in my books. I met Marlon through my older brother Rodney about 12 years ago (ironically killed by this monster) I refuse to call him a human being because he exhibits no traits of being human. Why should we allow this to happen? So much for gun control. it just goes to show guns dont kill people. people do! I have no intentions of returning to Belize, “the JEWEL in Central America”. My once-haven is now a complete nightmare. I prefer the streets of Oakland California because at least here, justice is not only for the privileged and few but for the masses.

YEs if POlice have jailed both guys from the beginning no one would have been murdered. both guys werent innocent and i think it is from there that the justice system fails. because when one is locked up and his parents are big in politics they come out. so then why the justice system in belize doesnt get harsh on these gangsters and lock all of them no matter who there families are. we cant be mourning and blaming one another. we dont know what was the life of the guy that was murdered, or the one that was said to have murdered him. if he went out of jail it was for a reason. i am not defending this case but i am tired of seeing the same person over and over accusing the other guy. let the police do there jobs. why only this case they acting like that. how about the guy glaves that was killed, the case ended there. come on get reall and stop using the media to be acusing people you heard as gossip did it.

Hey, I demand a picture of trevor lamb and Adrian Arzy!! Police department calling on you for the pictures, cause I need to be on the lookout for these two good for nothing …. criminals when they walk out of court free!!!

We all know our justice system will FAIL again!!

Set them free and these men have to install eyes behind their head to be on the lookout, cause Santa Rita Cementery is waiting for them!!!!!!!! you can run but you can’t hide!!! nicho!!!

  7. cindy says:

Agree with PGIA. what goes around comes around. no innocent is shot the manner they were. something had to be done for that to happen. and MAcal you will be like them. Santa rita cemetery that is left for people that have no understanding.
I believe that these things should be kept confidential. what if they are innocent god knows. we do not know. so why judge if any of the people who are criticizing werent even present at the time of the shooting. and i bet the victims arent innocents too.

  9. Grish says:

Well I must agree with some of the comments mention above, but i believe that if our justice system was more firm this whole issue could have not have happened. I am quite disappointed of our justice system in Belize. I must say rest in peace Marlon Rivera(SOSA) you will always live in our memories.

  10. macal rivera says:

cindy I agree with you what goes around comes around, so these men will just get back the same dose of what they did, becasue I am sure the system will fail again and they will be free like LIFE, to kill or get killed.

    you understand!!!!!!

look i knew life since we were little kids and from what i get from him that marlon saids that he wanted to kill life, so life say i will kill him first. look in this world nobody is and angel, i don,t kno why these guys were fighting, only them kno. marlon may be and angel infront of his peeps, but outside he was a gangstar, and you kno this. but i feel for his family, he was young and nobody should die young, but thats the way this cold world is, R.I.P marlon,

  15. Janel Morgan says:

    Elgin Martinez,
I live on a planet where an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is the modus operandi…oh do you need me to say that in creole because i can! It is a shame that everyone has become so complacent with “oh well thats just the way it is.” thats not the way it has to be! someone on another post on similar story said, “Lena bwai wah always have beef with San Ignacio bwai” thats ignorant, redundant and downright stupid! we are Lena we are San Ignacio! its not a foreign concept??? Elgin i am not “dissing” your jewel but if i were you id hardly call it a jewel! i cant stop you from feeling national pride…civic pride! extreme nationalism! whatever you want to paint the pig, its still a pig! like my mom says, “throw perfume on …. it still smells like …!” Belize is a thuggish country…third world doesnt have to be a bad thing, but we sure know how to ruin a good thing real fast! when youre done being uneducated, youre free to reply…as i refuse to waste brain waves on lackadaisical, common responses!
rise above situations…when people say something…internalize it…grow from it…breathe knowledge on the ignorant masses…
    I Remain,

  18. ronzy says:

I’m from Belize and am doing the same thing like a lot of other Belizeans work and have abetter life. Not because crimes are consistently high in Belize, I should not return. I still love my country and will always return and try to help people there. Sure crimes are committed and people get off because of the justice system but we are third world and thats what happen when we dont have the money to invest in better training and forensics and technology. We must also understand that every action has a reaction. Most people that gets killed brought it on themselves and their familes with the lives they choose. The other small percentage killed are by obvious depressed people that rob and those that are on drugs and just brought up without good parenting. If everyone leaves Belize and dont return, they are not patriotic to their own country and would do the same thing wherever they go when things are not good where they are.

  19. Elgin Martinez says:

Janel Morgan: You’re one of those Belizean who is going to realize where you’re from should you get deported from the US.

  20. Elgin Martinez says:

Janel Morgan: You sound more like an ignorant and not an educated person. You’re so offended by my statement what an educated fool. You talking about you can stop me from feeling National pride. You must be out of your mind brain washed Girl. How you there talk about Belize in such manner.I care less how you feel about my Jewel because if the White man was suppose to kick you out of his Country that’s where you would end up.

  21. Elgin Martinez says:

Janel Morgan: You’re acting like we need you in Belize. Stay in your first Worlld country Belize is not going to fail to exist because you chose to live in the US.Have you even given anything to Belize?

  22. Janel Morgan says:

Elgin for the record i am in no fear of getting deported! i am a US citizen!!! check your stats before you speak! You truly are ignorant! its sad! instead of asking me what have i done for belize ask yourself what youve done!!! dont judge me for not wanting to return to belize…unlike you i have options! LOL! life does suck doesnt it?

  23. cindy says:
